SUMMARY:100 Years of RRS Discovery
DESCRIPTION:Included in museum admission \n100 years ago\, RRS Discovery was designated the UK’s first Royal Research Ship. This was a pivotal moment in the history of marine science and launched a legacy of global oceanographic exploration that continues today.  \nTo commemorate this milestone\, curators from the National Oceanography Centre’s Discovery Collections and the University of Southampton’s National Oceanographic Library have collaborated with the Dundee Heritage Trust and the Marine Biological Association to develop a special exhibition entitled 100 Years of RRS Discovery exploring the evolution of ocean research over the past century.  \nFrom exploring the changing design and purpose of research ships to considering new questions driving oceanographic research\, this exhibition invites you to dive into the history of the Discovery Investigations\, and the four Royal Research Ships that have held the Discovery name in the last one hundred years.   \nCome and explore the exciting history of the Discovery Investigations\, discover the wide range of roles involved in making ocean exploration possible\, and get a glimpse into what life is really like aboard a scientific expedition.   \nYou may also enjoy finding out more information about this exhibition here: ‘100 Years of RRS Discovery’ Exhibition | National Oceanography Centre

SUMMARY:Maggie's: Architecture that Cares
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 30 years of Maggie’s and the power of inspiring spaces\nOver three decades\, a growing network of Maggie’s cancer care centres across the UK and beyond have shown that inspiring\, caring buildings can create a much-needed space\, away from the clinical environment of the hospital\, for people to process one of life’s toughest challenges. \nTo mark the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s\, this new exhibition will explore the organisation’s groundbreaking approach to design\, bringing together the voices of centre visitors and staff\, with the globally recognised architects who have designed these buildings. \nEach Maggie’s centre is a unique space\, designed with care by renowned architects from around the world\, including Frank Gehry\, Zaha Hadid\, Richard Rogers\, Norman Foster and Benedetta Tagliabue. \nIn response to her own experiences of cancer\, Maggie Keswick Jencks dreamt of buildings that would help people ‘not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. By showing the design principles behind these unique buildings\, the exhibition will show the importance of a warm welcome and a sense of home\, views of nature\, and moments of flexibility\, beauty and surprise in creating inspiring spaces.

SUMMARY:Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Fashion shows have grown from intimate salon presentations to global spectacles generating dazzling images shared worldwide. Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show will trace the evolution of the catwalk from the private fashion salons of the late 19th century to today’s live-stream experiences documenting over 100 years of fashion show history. \nSpotlighting their creativity\, energy and impact\, the exhibition brings together landmark examples from renowned fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen\, Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, Maison Margiela\, Prada\, Paco Rabanne\, Viktor & Rolf\, Louis Vuitton and Yoji Yamamoto\, amongst others. Exploring the history and cultural significance of the runway\, Catwalk will document seminal moments in fashion\, including the theatrical spectacles seen at Alexander McQueen and dramatic show settings such as Fendi at the Great Wall of China\, Dior’s takeover of Drummond Castle Gardens in Perthshire and Chanel’s staging of a rocket launch. \nFrom ’60s subcultures to fashion in a digital age\, fashion shows are epic creative endeavours\, blending many different design disciplines – architecture\, lighting\, music\, film\, makeup\, hairdressing\, jewellery\, set design and fashion – into carefully choreographed fleeting sequences with models centre-stage. In Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show\, the catwalk through the changing eras will be brought to life with film and photographs\, original collection pieces\, stage props and a wealth of archival material\, creating a vivid experience of the catwalk from its beginnings to the present day.

SUMMARY:Making Sense – a multi-sensory approach to art
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by PhD student Jinyu Han featuring tactile models and audio descriptions to help interpret art collections\nExhibitions of visual art normally rely on the power of sight but how might we experience them using other senses? This exhibition showcases the research of Jinyu ‘Eevee’ Han\, a PhD student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design\, who has been collaborating with Dundee Sight Support & Social Hub and North East Sensory Services to create tactile models and audio descriptions for blind and partially sighted visitors. You will be able to experience a range of artworks using these alternative methods of interpretation\, and the exhibition also includes some sensory artworks that were created to be touched. \nThe exhibition is on from 10 April – 26 June and is open Monday-Friday 9.30am – 7pm.  If you wish to arrive after 5pm\, please contact us beforehand on museum@dundee.ac.uk or 01382 384310 and we will try to arrange this.

SUMMARY:Streets Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Explore the future of our high streets\nStreets Ahead is a national design challenge that invites young people to imagine what Scotland’s high streets could become. As the next generation of designers\, citizens\, and users of these spaces\, their insight is vital. By involving young people directly in the planning and redesign process\, Streets Ahead not only ensures their voices are heard – it empowers them to take pride in shaping the communities they live in. \nThrough the programme\, young people explore urban planning\, architecture\, and design\, building the skills and confidence to influence real world change. Sixty three schools from across Scotland took part\, with finalists attending a hands-on “Design Jam” where they developed and prototyped their ideas alongside professional designers. \nThis display presents the finalists’ visionary prototypes – fresh perspectives on what our high streets could become. \nStreets Ahead is led by V&A Dundee’s Schools Development Officer\, a unique position made possible through a Dundee City Council secondment. The project is proudly supported by the NCR Foundation\, who are also providing the winning team from Tarbert Academy with an exclusive work experience opportunity at NCR Atleos in Dundee.

SUMMARY:Light Show
DESCRIPTION:The presence of light is something we generally take for granted. The familiar flipping of a light switch or the constancy of the sun (especially in Scotland’s sunniest city!) is part of our daily lives. Yet the natural phenomenon of light is essential to everything we see\, know and experience. It has been harnessed\, generated and studied by scientists and artists alike. \nThis multi-disciplinary exhibition brings together objects from across the University’s museum collections\, including art and design\, science\, medicine and natural history\, inviting visitors to consider how light inspires art\, impacts nature and informs discovery. \nThe exhibition is open Mon-Fri 9.30am-7pm (suggested last entry 5pm). \nFind out more about University of Dundee Museums

SUMMARY:T is for tea. T is for typography. T is for telling stories.
DESCRIPTION:Volk Gallery\, a non-institutional arts venue consisting of a repurposed vending machine\, is proud to present ‘T’\, a collaboration between designers Jamie Stein (graphic and product designer) and Connor Finlayson (service and interaction designer). Inspired by the humble act of sharing a cuppa\, 50 ‘T’ bags will act as a medium for queer storytelling\, design intervention\, and shared experience. Working together at the intersection of art and design\, Jamie and Connor will explore how objects\, flavours\, and stories can create space for conversation and care\, centred around queer voices often unheard\, unnoticed\, or unspoken in public life. Through the wonders of tea and type\, they craft gentle prompts for conversation\, or small invitations to sit with difference and get a taste of someone else’s world. Their aim is to create an experience that is both intimate and shared\, familiar\, and slightly strange. \nT embraces the mechanical\, surprising\, and public nature of Volk Gallery. Picture grabbing a cuppa with someone you don’t yet know and tasting something a little different from what you expect. Dispensed within Dundee’s Central Library\, a space for stories\, learning\, and community\, each piece offers a one-off moment of encounter: part artefact\, part story\, part flavour. The gallery will quietly distribute fragments of lived experience throughout Dundee Month of Design.

SUMMARY:Michael Coppelov at Nomas* Projects
DESCRIPTION:Michael Coppelov’s artwork stems from an attempt to understand and map the interconnection of our world using Deleuze and Guattari’s Rhizome as a model. Real-world geographical locations are key to this with each painting linked to somewhere Michael has been: French motorway service stations\, Spanish and Alpine road tunnels and the Rome Metro network to name a few. \nThe paintings use an isometric grid which both elevates the viewer to a god’s-eye position and removes horizons and perspectives. It was widely used in 1990s computer gaming as a rudimentary device in which to construct a landscape which could be potentially extended in all directions beyond the computer screen – or in this case\, the edges of the painting. \nThe works here reference these iconic games alongside the railway posters of the 1950s and 60s which appealed to travellers in the pre-Beeching railway age about the potential to quickly be somewhere else. Other works use the motifs from Transport Tycoon to describe the endless road networks of the world and the potential to disappear under a mountain only to emerge on the other side.
