SUMMARY:Maggie's: Architecture that Cares
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 30 years of Maggie’s and the power of inspiring spaces\nOver three decades\, a growing network of Maggie’s cancer care centres across the UK and beyond have shown that inspiring\, caring buildings can create a much-needed space\, away from the clinical environment of the hospital\, for people to process one of life’s toughest challenges. \nTo mark the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s\, this new exhibition will explore the organisation’s groundbreaking approach to design\, bringing together the voices of centre visitors and staff\, with the globally recognised architects who have designed these buildings. \nEach Maggie’s centre is a unique space\, designed with care by renowned architects from around the world\, including Frank Gehry\, Zaha Hadid\, Richard Rogers\, Norman Foster and Benedetta Tagliabue. \nIn response to her own experiences of cancer\, Maggie Keswick Jencks dreamt of buildings that would help people ‘not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. By showing the design principles behind these unique buildings\, the exhibition will show the importance of a warm welcome and a sense of home\, views of nature\, and moments of flexibility\, beauty and surprise in creating inspiring spaces.

SUMMARY:Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Fashion shows have grown from intimate salon presentations to global spectacles generating dazzling images shared worldwide. Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show will trace the evolution of the catwalk from the private fashion salons of the late 19th century to today’s live-stream experiences documenting over 100 years of fashion show history. \nSpotlighting their creativity\, energy and impact\, the exhibition brings together landmark examples from renowned fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen\, Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, Maison Margiela\, Prada\, Paco Rabanne\, Viktor & Rolf\, Louis Vuitton and Yoji Yamamoto\, amongst others. Exploring the history and cultural significance of the runway\, Catwalk will document seminal moments in fashion\, including the theatrical spectacles seen at Alexander McQueen and dramatic show settings such as Fendi at the Great Wall of China\, Dior’s takeover of Drummond Castle Gardens in Perthshire and Chanel’s staging of a rocket launch. \nFrom ’60s subcultures to fashion in a digital age\, fashion shows are epic creative endeavours\, blending many different design disciplines – architecture\, lighting\, music\, film\, makeup\, hairdressing\, jewellery\, set design and fashion – into carefully choreographed fleeting sequences with models centre-stage. In Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show\, the catwalk through the changing eras will be brought to life with film and photographs\, original collection pieces\, stage props and a wealth of archival material\, creating a vivid experience of the catwalk from its beginnings to the present day.

SUMMARY:Streets Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Explore the future of our high streets\nStreets Ahead is a national design challenge that invites young people to imagine what Scotland’s high streets could become. As the next generation of designers\, citizens\, and users of these spaces\, their insight is vital. By involving young people directly in the planning and redesign process\, Streets Ahead not only ensures their voices are heard – it empowers them to take pride in shaping the communities they live in. \nThrough the programme\, young people explore urban planning\, architecture\, and design\, building the skills and confidence to influence real world change. Sixty three schools from across Scotland took part\, with finalists attending a hands-on “Design Jam” where they developed and prototyped their ideas alongside professional designers. \nThis display presents the finalists’ visionary prototypes – fresh perspectives on what our high streets could become. \nStreets Ahead is led by V&A Dundee’s Schools Development Officer\, a unique position made possible through a Dundee City Council secondment. The project is proudly supported by the NCR Foundation\, who are also providing the winning team from Tarbert Academy with an exclusive work experience opportunity at NCR Atleos in Dundee.

SUMMARY:Forgotten Fleece Tales
DESCRIPTION:Forgotten Fleece Tales is a celebration of the space where art\, craft\, story and ecology come together. The exhibition features a curated collection of works made using “waste” or “unwanted” organic Scottish fleece\, and by-products of industrial fleece processing. \nWith a combination of wearables\, wall hangings\, home textiles\, sculptural pieces and interactive experiences\, Forgotten Fleece Tales provides an immersive and in-depth exploration of the enduring value of Scottish fleece\, both in terms of farming and textiles heritage\, and hopes for a sustainable future. \nThe theme of “forgotten” fleece will bind the pieces together in the form of a unique piece of short fiction written for each creation. These tales will draw on aspects of Scottish folklore\, history\, and landscapes. They will invite readers to connect more closely with the story of wool – both in the pieces on display\, and in their everyday lives. Visitors can engage with these stories in their written format\, or follow QR codes to discover video recordings. \nThis exploration of fleece in folklore will be further drawn upon by a featured panel exploring the role of textiles in our country’s lore and legend\, including traditional stories of goddesses\, banshees and crones. \nForgotten Fleece Tales aims to engage visitors with sensory experiences\, challenging them to honour wool’s place in our heritage\, and to rethink it as a sustainable and versatile material for our future.

SUMMARY:Traces of Care
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores connections between historical and contemporary works across different generations. Themes of care\, labour\, memory\, domesticity and visibility are explored\, showing how these connections still resonate today. Many of the artists represented in the collections were once students or members of staff at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design\, and their work and experiences form an important part of Dundee’s creative history. Through these shared themes\, the exhibition shows how artists leave identifiable traces of themselves in their work and how artworks can act as records of lived experience\, connecting generations through shared concerns and perspectives. Visitors are invited to reflect on how certain themes of care\, labour and lived experience continue to be carried forward through generations of practice. \nCurated by DJCAD MFA Curatorial Practice student Shannon Farley\, the exhibition brings together material from the University’s Museum Collections with additional works on loan. \nMany of the artworks on show are part of the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design Collection cared for by the University of Dundee Museums\, which is now Recognised by the Scottish Government as a Collection of National Significance. \nThe Tower Building is open Monday-Friday 9.30am-7pm (last entry is usually 5pm).
