SUMMARY:Nacre and the Grain: Contemporary Jewellery and the Scottish Landscape
DESCRIPTION:V&A Dundee will host Nacre and the Grain: Contemporary Jewellery and the Scottish Landscape on Friday 29 May 2026\, a public event exploring how Scotland’s landscapes shape contemporary jewellery practice through material\, memory\, and ecological attention. Developed in collaboration with Art Jewelry Forum and Craft Scotland\, the event reflects ongoing research in jewellery\, sustainability\, and the relationship between making and place. \n‘The Nacre and the Grain: Approaches to Ecological Empathy in Scotland’ co-authored by Kristin Beeler and Sandra Wilson for Sustainable Jewelry: History\, Culture and Territory\, by Springer Nature published 2 May 2026. Building from that research\, Nacre and the Grain considers how jewellery can register the connections between natural materials\, recovered metals\, local geology\, and environmental responsibility. \nAt the centre of the programme is a public presentation and conversation in the Juniper Auditorium\, followed by an opportunity to meet artists in the Robertson Studio and view a showcase of work related to the multiplicity of the Scottish landscape. As part of the V&A Dundee’s published programme\, this event is an exploration of how natural materials such as pearls in Scotland and recovered precious metals from electronic waste shape contemporary jewellery practice. \nThe 10:30–11:15am public session will begin with a presentation by Kristin Beeler on contemporary jewellery and the Scottish landscape\, followed by a contribution from Sandra Wilson on her research interests including her publication Brick\, Bread and Biscuit\, a presentation by Stefanie Cheong about her work in jewellery sustainability and a concluding audience discussion with questions around landscape as was of thinking through material practices. \nSpeakers \nKristin Beeler is Programme Director in Jewellery and Metal Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design\, University of Dundee. Her research and practice explore jewellery\, memory\, ecology\, and empathy\, and Nacre and the Grain extends that work through a focus on the relationship between vulnerable landscapes and material practice. \nProfessor Emeritus Dr Sandra Wilson is a contemporary jeweller\, silversmith\, researcher\, and educator at the University of Dundee\, where she holds a personal chair in Ecological Metal Design. Her research focuses on new surface finishes and alloys created from precious metals recovered from electronic waste\, linking jewellery practice to sustainability\, scientific collaboration\, and new material futures. \nStefanie Ying Lin Cheong is a Glasgow-based artist jeweller who works with Fairtrade and recycled metals alongside found Scottish rock. Her practice combines traditional lapidary methods with sustainable design principles\, creating jewellery and objects that foreground geology\, place\, and the environmental histories embedded in materials. \nParticipating Artists \nThe full artist list includes Michelle Currie\, Iona Turner\, Andrea Dritschel\, Emma Louise Wilson\, Rowan Dean\, Ieva Jankovska\, Islay Spalding\, Monica Findlay\, Kristina Merchant\, Amy Findlay\, Hannah Keddie\, Damien Carpenter\, Eileen Gatt\, and Lyndsay Fairley.

SUMMARY:In-conversation with Matthew McIntyre Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Join UNESCO City of Design Dundee for a discussion with Māori designer and artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson. \n\n\n\n\nDesigner and artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson (based in Whanganui\, Aotearoa) is a practitioner whose work brings together Māori cultural practices\, museological inquiry\, and contemporary craft. Matthew is spending April in Dundee visiting Scottish museum collections of taonga (an object or natural resource which is highly prized) and exploring the importance of natural materials and traditions in Scottish textiles. \nJoin UNESCO City of Design Dundee for a relaxed in-conversation event where we’ll explore some of the key themes of Matthew’s work. \nAbout the Speaker \nMatthew McIntyre Wilson (Taranaki\, Ngā Māhanga\, Tītahi) is a practitioner whose work brings together Māori cultural practices\, museological inquiry\, and contemporary craft. Based in Whanganui\, Aotearoa\, his practice is grounded in a sustained commitment to revitalising ancestral knowledge while expanding the possibilities of object-making today. Trained initially as a jeweller at Whitireia Polytechnic and Hawke’s Bay Polytechnic\, his early focus on fine metalwork later converged with the weaving knowledge he learned under the guidance of master weaver and close friend Rangi Kiu. This convergence created a distinct practice in which jewellery and fibre technologies intertwine\, enabling him to create intricately woven forms such as kete\, tātua\, armbands\, and kākahu using both customary and contemporary materials. \nThis talk is a part of Textile Legacies\, a residency programme that connects indigenous and ancestral textile practices between Whanganui\, New Zealand\, and Dundee to foster meaningful cultural and creative exchange\, coordinated by UNESCO City of Design Dundee and UNESCO City of Design Whanganui. It is supported by the British Council New Zealand and the Pacific’s Connections Through Culture Programme and Scottish Government’s Scottish Connections Fund. \nHeader Image: Matthew McIntyre Wilson\, ‘Whatu Atu\, Whatu Mai\, Following the Thread of Knowledge through Hīnaki\, Korotete\, and Kupenga’ at Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery\, Whanganui

SUMMARY:Fife Queer Zine Fest
DESCRIPTION:Fife Queer Zine Fest is a new celebration of LGBTQ+ creative activity in Fife. Featuring an artists’ market alongside talks\, workshops\, music and spoken word\, it’s a cosy celebration of proud lives and subversive ideas.\n\n11-6pm\, Saturday 21st February Forgan Arts Centre Free entry \nA zine is a wee magazine (that’s where the name comes from!) that anyone can make and share. A zine can be as simple as a folded sheet of paper or as elaborate as a glossy journal\, using writing or photography or collage or drawing or anything else the zine-maker enjoys. For decades\, zines have been part of LGBTQ+ and feminist culture\, featuring at punk nights and community gardens\, protests and collective events. A zine fest is a grassroots events where independent writers and artists can come together to swap and share their publications and learn from each other. Let’s make one happen in Fife! \nWe’ll be announcing the full programme of stallholders and events in 2026. You can expect chances to get your hands on creative activities\, hear from brilliant artists\, and browse stalls from zine-makers and community groups. \nIf you’re a LGBTQ+ artist from Fife and you’d be interested in a stall at our zine fair\, we’d love to hear from you. Stalls will be free to hold\, but our space is quite limited\, so priority will be given to artists working in zines and small-scale print culture\, and we can’t provide space to commercial businesses. A good rule of thumb is\, if your artistic work is priced cheaply and you’re open to swapping it for someone else’s work\, a zine fair is right for you!
