SUMMARY:DJCAD Masters Show - MRes Research Showcase
DESCRIPTION:A new event for Masters Show 2025\, hear from two of our graduating MRes (Masters by Research) students about their very different research projects.  \nRiver Paterson (MRes Design) will be discussing the findings of her paper regarding queer experience in Scotland and experiences of gender discrimination and with transphobic rhetoric faced in Scotland\, looking at how social systems that produce oppressive norms and conditions are maintained in a given culture. Their presentation will share the contextual research\, the research process and the findings of the paper.  \nNeuroscientist Amanda Taylor (MRes Fine Art) has spent years studying the brain’s stress axis\, exploring neurons at a singular level. While stress is often associated with intense neuronal activity\, her work reflects on their grace and serenity as much as their power. Inspired by Santiago Ramón y Cajal—the “godfather of neuroscience”—and his intricate pen-and-ink drawings\, she reimagines neurons not as agents of stress\, but as elegant\, tranquil structures revealed in striking modern molecular imagery.  \n After the session – introduced by Professor Anita Taylor – there will be the opportunity to ask questions\, as well as meet staff from the school’s recruitment team.

SUMMARY:Future Materials Table
DESCRIPTION:Materials have the power to shape the future of sustainable design\nFirst presented in 2024 as part of AdesignStorie‘s The House of Wellbeing — an immersive installation commissioned by Dundee Design Festival that explored biophilic and regenerative design — The Future Materials Table features 51 examples of biomaterials from a range of artists and designers. Complementing them are additional climate-conscious samples of emerging approaches to sustainable interior design from AdesignStorie’s material library. \nRooted in the principles of biophilic design\, this display explores how nature-inspired materials such as oyster shell ceramics\, kombucha leather\, and hemp bioplastics can be used to form sustainable spaces that work in harmony with the surrounding landscape. Engage with the loose samples\, feel their textures\, and create your own mood board to envision your sustainable home. \nThis pop-up display is part of our A Fragile Correspondence public programme. \nDundee Design Festival is a regular event devised and delivered by UNESCO City of Design Dundee. The 2024 edition was curated by Stacey Hunter of Local Heroes. \nHeader Image: Dundee Design Festival 2024. Curated by Stacey Hunter. Photography by Grant Anderson

SUMMARY:The Triumph of Textiles - Industrial Dundee c1700-1918
DESCRIPTION:Chris Whatley (University of Dundee) and Jim Tomlinson (University of Glasgow) will give an illustrated talk based on their new book The Triumph of Textiles: Industrial Dundee\, c. 1700–1918 \nThe Triumph of Textiles is an account of Dundee’s remarkable rise as one of the world’s leading textile manufacturing centres. It reveals that before ‘Juteopolis’. Dundee was the UK’s number one coarse linen producer – the basis of jute’s success. The authors challenge received opinion about the rise of linen and jute\, for example by questioning the assumed importance of whale oil\, and pointing to the vital role of canvas\, carpets and rugs amongst the industry’s product mix. They wonder too if the image of Dundee’s workers is in need of revision; for a long time\, Dundee was a magnet for migrant workers and a place of social harmony as exemplified by the occasion of the opening of Baxter Park in 1863. It was from the 1870s that social conditions came under scrutiny and industrial relations became more fractious. \nChristopher A Whatley OBE\, FRSE is Emeritus Professor of Scottish History at the University of Dundee where\, during better times\, he was Vice-Principal. He has written widely on aspects of Scotland’s history and literature. His interests range from salt manufacturing through the everyday life of ordinary people to the legacy of Robert Burns and Dundee. \nHe is best known for his work on Scotland’s place within the UK union. His most recent books are: Pabay: An Island Odyssey (2019)\, a history of and part autobiographical account of his family’s life on this small inner Hebridean island; Salt: Scotland’s Newest Oldest Industry (2022)\, and\, with Jim Tomlinson\, The Triumph of Textiles: Industrial Dundee\, 1700-1918 (2024).
