SUMMARY:Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Explore the history of Palestinian dress and the ancient practice of elaborate hand-embroidery\nTatreez is an ancient practice of elaborate hand-embroidery\, and each region of Palestine has its own distinct and identifiable style making embroidery a language as much as a craft. For centuries\, a Palestinian woman’s dress – its cut\, colour\, textiles\, stitches and motifs – reflected her life story. Written into garments are the signs of youth or grief\, the marks of motherhood and rural life\, as well as the traces of social\, political and economic change in Palestine\, from the late nineteenth century to the present. \n2025 marks 45 years of Dundee’s twin city relationship with Nablus\, Palestine and this exhibition takes the opportunity to spotlight Nabulsi dress and tell the story of the historic connection between Scotland and Palestine\, through material from Dundee collections and Palestinian archives. \nThread Memory also features contemporary embroidered dress\, including newly commissioned looks from Palestinian fashion designers building upon inherited cultural traditions. Work by contemporary artists engaging with tatreez will sit next to the traditional dress on display\, alongside interviews with Palestinian embroiderers. \nCurated by V&A’s Jameel Curator of Contemporary Art from the Middle East\, Rachel Dedman\, Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine is made in partnership with Hayy Jameel and the Palestinian Museum. It is based on an exhibition of the same title currently on show at Hayy Jameel in Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia.

SUMMARY:Layers of Detail - Encountering the Collections
DESCRIPTION:Last year\, Comics Youth SCIO was invited to respond to the University of Dundee’s museum and archive collections. A group of young people aged 18-25 were introduced to selected parts of the collections\, including comics art and artists’ books\, and invited to respond. Of particular interest to this group was our extensive collection of original comics art. Many of the pieces used transparent acetate layers to add text or colour to the underlying artwork. Participants chose to use this method as a unifying framing device for the work that they created in response. This exhibition in the Dalhousie Building features new work created by the project participants as well as some of the original comics art that helped to inspire them. \nJoin us for a preview of the exhibition in the foyer of the Dalhousie Building on Tuesday 24 February\, 5-6pm. The exhibition then runs Monday-Friday until 1 May.

SUMMARY:Maggie's: Architecture that Cares
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 30 years of Maggie’s and the power of inspiring spaces\nOver three decades\, a growing network of Maggie’s cancer care centres across the UK and beyond have shown that inspiring\, caring buildings can create a much-needed space\, away from the clinical environment of the hospital\, for people to process one of life’s toughest challenges. \nTo mark the 30th anniversary of Maggie’s\, this new exhibition will explore the organisation’s groundbreaking approach to design\, bringing together the voices of centre visitors and staff\, with the globally recognised architects who have designed these buildings. \nEach Maggie’s centre is a unique space\, designed with care by renowned architects from around the world\, including Frank Gehry\, Zaha Hadid\, Richard Rogers\, Norman Foster and Benedetta Tagliabue. \nIn response to her own experiences of cancer\, Maggie Keswick Jencks dreamt of buildings that would help people ‘not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. By showing the design principles behind these unique buildings\, the exhibition will show the importance of a warm welcome and a sense of home\, views of nature\, and moments of flexibility\, beauty and surprise in creating inspiring spaces.

SUMMARY:Çhengey as Cheer
DESCRIPTION:Volk Gallery is proud to present the work of Maeve Callister-Wafer. Each Volk artist is given a size limit and budget and left to their own devices. With this brief\, Callister-Wafer has produced viewfinders\, adorned with graphic lino prints. Manx Gaelic\, Callister-Wafer’s native language from the Isle of Man\, often acts as the driving force behind her work. These viewfinders encourage us to look at how the landscape and language reflect and shape each other\, and the impacts of their decline and revival. The editions connect Gaelic Manx and English words with nature\, pushing us to get outside and perhaps even learn a little Manx. \n_______________________________ \nVolk Gallery is a non-institutional arts venue based in Dundee\, Scotland. Consisting of a repurposed nappy vending machine\, Volk Gallery is hung in the publicly accessible locale of Central Library in The Wellgate. A rotation of products are dispensed at a set price of £3 each. Works are completed by commissioned artists and change monthly.

SUMMARY:Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Fashion shows have grown from intimate salon presentations to global spectacles generating dazzling images shared worldwide. Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show will trace the evolution of the catwalk from the private fashion salons of the late 19th century to today’s live-stream experiences documenting over 100 years of fashion show history. \nSpotlighting their creativity\, energy and impact\, the exhibition brings together landmark examples from renowned fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen\, Balenciaga\, Chanel\, Dior\, Maison Margiela\, Prada\, Paco Rabanne\, Viktor & Rolf\, Louis Vuitton and Yoji Yamamoto\, amongst others. Exploring the history and cultural significance of the runway\, Catwalk will document seminal moments in fashion\, including the theatrical spectacles seen at Alexander McQueen and dramatic show settings such as Fendi at the Great Wall of China\, Dior’s takeover of Drummond Castle Gardens in Perthshire and Chanel’s staging of a rocket launch. \nFrom ’60s subcultures to fashion in a digital age\, fashion shows are epic creative endeavours\, blending many different design disciplines – architecture\, lighting\, music\, film\, makeup\, hairdressing\, jewellery\, set design and fashion – into carefully choreographed fleeting sequences with models centre-stage. In Catwalk: The Art of the Fashion Show\, the catwalk through the changing eras will be brought to life with film and photographs\, original collection pieces\, stage props and a wealth of archival material\, creating a vivid experience of the catwalk from its beginnings to the present day.

SUMMARY:In-conversation with Matthew McIntyre Wilson
DESCRIPTION:Join UNESCO City of Design Dundee for a discussion with Māori designer and artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson. \n\n\n\n\nDesigner and artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson (based in Whanganui\, Aotearoa) is a practitioner whose work brings together Māori cultural practices\, museological inquiry\, and contemporary craft. Matthew is spending April in Dundee visiting Scottish museum collections of taonga (an object or natural resource which is highly prized) and exploring the importance of natural materials and traditions in Scottish textiles. \nJoin UNESCO City of Design Dundee for a relaxed in-conversation event where we’ll explore some of the key themes of Matthew’s work. \nAbout the Speaker \nMatthew McIntyre Wilson (Taranaki\, Ngā Māhanga\, Tītahi) is a practitioner whose work brings together Māori cultural practices\, museological inquiry\, and contemporary craft. Based in Whanganui\, Aotearoa\, his practice is grounded in a sustained commitment to revitalising ancestral knowledge while expanding the possibilities of object-making today. Trained initially as a jeweller at Whitireia Polytechnic and Hawke’s Bay Polytechnic\, his early focus on fine metalwork later converged with the weaving knowledge he learned under the guidance of master weaver and close friend Rangi Kiu. SUMMARY:Making Sense – a multi-sensory approach to art
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by PhD student Jinyu Han featuring tactile models and audio descriptions to help interpret art collections\nExhibitions of visual art normally rely on the power of sight but how might we experience them using other senses? This exhibition showcases the research of Jinyu ‘Eevee’ Han\, a PhD student at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design\, who has been collaborating with Dundee Sight Support & Social Hub and North East Sensory Services to create tactile models and audio descriptions for blind and partially sighted visitors. You will be able to experience a range of artworks using these alternative methods of interpretation\, and the exhibition also includes some sensory artworks that were created to be touched. \nThe exhibition is on from 10 April – 26 June and is open Monday-Friday 9.30am – 7pm.  If you wish to arrive after 5pm\, please contact us beforehand on museum@dundee.ac.uk or 01382 384310 and we will try to arrange this.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Harakeke
DESCRIPTION:Join Māori designer and artist Matthew McIntyre Wilson for an introduction to harakeke\, its properties and possibilities. \nHarakeke\, also known as New Zealand flax\, is an evergreen perennial plant native to Aotearoa New Zealand. With tall\, sword-like leaves\, this large plant is common throughout the country\, especially in wet areas. Harakeke sits at the heart of Māori weaving\, representing a whānau (family). Many varieties were historically grown for specific purposes – to produce clothing\, fishing nets\, bindings\, baskets\, mats and more. Surprisingly\, harakeke is commonplace on the east coast of Scotland and can often be seen in municipal garden schemes due to its hardy nature. \nUsing harakeke gathered from around Dundee\, Matthew will share some traditional weaving techniques and chat more about his work to revitalise ancestral weaving knowledge to inform contemporary craft and design today. At the end of the day\, you’ll go away with a better understanding of the cultural importance of harakeke\, how to look after it\, harvest it and its potential uses. \nThis workshop is a part of Textile Legacies\, a residency programme that connects indigenous and ancestral textile practices between Whanganui\, New Zealand\, and Dundee to foster meaningful cultural and creative exchange\, coordinated by UNESCO City of Design Dundee and UNESCO City of Design Whanganui. It is supported by the British Council New Zealand and the Pacific’s Connections Through Culture Programme and Scottish Government’s Scottish Connections Fund.

SUMMARY:Madder\, Weld & Woad: The Three Primaries
DESCRIPTION:Madder\, Weld & Woad with Old Mill Arts\nSat 18 & Sun 19 April\, 10am-4pm\nFrom the three primaries a whole spectrum of colour emerges… \nDuring this two-day workshop\, Lucy and Edward of Old Mill Arts will guide you through the botanical inks by focusing on three plants that have been the source of colour for thousands of years. From the madder plant root comes vibrant red\, a luminous yellow from weld\, and a green tinged blue from the leaves of woad. \nDuring these workshops we cover many aspects of these plants\, placing them in historical context and their individual botanical characteristics. \nThis is followed by a demonstration of dyeing and guidance on how to achieve pigments and ink from the plants. There will also time to experiment with some pre made inks\, mixing them to see how to extend the range of colour possibilities. \nThis workshop is suitable for beginners who want to try making botanical dyes\, and for those who have already begun their journey with natural dyes\, but would like to refine their skills\, or learn further skills. \nAbout the tutors \nEdward and Lucy are artists and workshop facilitators with Old Mill Arts\, based in Dumfries and Galloway. After searching for a richer connection to their creative materials\, the two spent several years developing and learning interwoven practices in the crafts of making art materials.    \nEdward and Lucy teach all over the UK in these various crafts\, empowering artists and creatives in making their own art materials linking participants to the cultural heritage of these crafts\, having conversations about sustainable art practices\, and illuminating the huge potential of making in collaboration with the natural world.

SUMMARY:Thread Memory Symposium
DESCRIPTION:An international symposium on the history\, future and power of tatreez\nTatreez is the ancient practice of elaborate hand-embroidery in Palestine. The cut\, colour\, material\, and motifs within historic embroidery and dress operate as a language as much as a craft. It tells stories of Palestine’s remarkable regional diversity and the lives of its people. \nThis symposium invites speakers from Palestine\, the UK\, and beyond to unfold some of these lesser-known stories and share new research from the field. Panels and presentations will explore Palestine’s influence on Scottish and British design\, textile activism\, dyeing practices\, and contemporary fashion. \nAs an extension of Thread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine\, the symposium will weave in findings and learnings on the roles and responsibilities that cultural organisations hold whilst Palestinian objects and stories are in their care. \nFull programme details to follow. Tickets will include access to the day’s full programme and refreshments. This is a non-profit event and the cost of your ticket will cover the costs required to run this event. \nWe don’t want pricing to be a barrier so we have a limited number of free spaces available for those who need it. To request a free ticket\, please contact our team via email or call +44 (0)1382 411611. \nThread Memory: Embroidery from Palestine is made in partnership with Art Jameel\, the Palestinian Museum\, V&A South Kensington and V&A Dundee.
