Celebrate and demonstrate the impact of design, engaging citizens in design, the work of designers and opportunities for co-design.
We believe in celebrating the impact of design in our city which we demonstrate through delivering a number of projects each year, including:
Dundee Month of Design – Each May, we showcase a whole month of design which is an annual initiative that launched in 2018. This was created to celebrate and highlight all of the diverse design-related activity that goes on across the city throughout May.
Dundee Design Festival – We invite Dundee based artists and designers to curate this biannual festival, who have previously always utilised underused physical spaces across the city. Dundee Design Festival celebrates the impact of design in Dundee, its designers, its spaces and its people.
Dundee Design Parade – This annual event which launched in May 2018 and was co-designed by young people from Dundee, has had over 900 participants, aged 26 and under, taken part so far. Dundee Design Parade showcases the creative talent of our city’s communities and celebrates our place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
Champion Dundee’s designers by promoting their talent, supporting their creative and commercial success, and involving them in decisions.
We are committed to championing Dundee’s designers and have done this through:
CODE Souvenir – A concept which was originally developed by Montréal City of Design, we have launched CODE Souvenir; a physical and online catalogue which champions the work of Dundee based designers. We have showcased local designs and highlighted where companies, tourists or Dundonians themselves, can buy their own items and take home a small piece of Dundee, City of Design.
Being a Designer Workshops – Hosted by Creative Dundee in March 2019, we wanted to hear from some of Dundee’s designers to help inform and implement the city’s designation’s 2019-2022 action plan. These participatory workshops tested ideas and gathered input from designers to ask how the city can further support them.
Design Stories – As well as actively sharing and promoting the work of Dundee’s designers across social media channels with a local and international following, we have continued to create original website content which profiles Dundee’s designers and the people behind some of the city’s innovative design-orientated projects.
Actively participate in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network/Collaborate and share in developing projects and learnings from other UNESCO Cities of Design.
Some of our highlights from participating in the network include:
Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week 2019 – Dundee was hosted as Bilbao’s guest city of honour at their 2019 Design Week where we were thrilled to produce an exhibition featuring Print City by Print Festival Scotland and Shpeel by Biome Collective. Representatives from both Print Festival Scotland and Biome Collective attended this exhibition launch.
Include Conference, Detroit 2019 – Dundee Design Festival producers; Lyall Bruce and Ryan McLeod of Agency of None, attended Detroit City of Design’s Include conference in 2019 and exhibited Poster Playground. This interactive project which launched at Dundee Design Festival 2019, encouraged participants of the conference to get involved and answer a series of questions using bespoke design tools.
UNESCO Creative Cities Design Subnetwork Meeting 2018 – In October 2018, we were proud to host this meeting which saw 36 international colleagues visit our city from 19 sister UNESCO Cities of Design. Taking place across a packed 3 days of events, this opportunity allowed representatives from across the world to gather and discuss how each City of Design could collaboratively continue to work together.
We are joining the online global conversation during this year’s UNESCO General Conference by celebrating 75 years of UNESCO and the positive impact our designation has made to our city!
