In this class you will learn the ‘multiple figure eight-knot’, a knot traditionally used by sailors and climbers as a stopper knot. When repeated, it creates a bow shape which translates well to wearable textiles. Tutor, Sarah Grigg will demonstrate how the multiple figure eight-knot and how to make the necklace. There will be time for you to practice and experiment before selecting a coloured rope of your choice to create your own necklace. Once you’ve finished knotting the rope, you’ll size the necklace and attach the fittings and you’re necklace will be complete.
If you’d like to learn more about working with textiles and knotting, artist Windy Chien’s practice is rooted in textile knotting. You can find out more about her work and practice in her book ‘The Year of Knots’.
All materials for the necklace are provided by the tutor. However, feel free to bring in any images or objects you’re inspired by as well as a paper or sketch book for taking notes.
