OPEN CALL: Collaborative Commissions

Creative Dundee together with InGAME, have launched their first Insights Collaborative Commission of £1,000, inviting applications that combine creativity and games to demonstrate the early-stage potential of creating positive social impacts through experimental collaborations.

At each of their InGAME Insights events, Creative Dundee and InGAME have an open call for one Insights Collaborative Commission of £1,000. They’re making this commission available to stimulate new, collaborative ways for creative communities across the city and wider region – artists, designers, makers, games developers – to come together around topics that matter.

Through this commission, the aim is to: promote partnerships between Dundee and the wider region’s creative and games sectors; provide time for collaborators to learn from each other and visit each other’s work spaces, either physically or virtually; champion collaborative learning and opportunities for experimentation; create space for concept development, with clear societal benefits; and share insight blogs on Creative Dundee’s website following each commission.

Applicants eligible to apply for this commission are:

  • A creative practitioner / business collaborating with a games practitioner / business, or vice versa. Freelancers, SME businesses, students, creative social enterprises, charities and collectives are eligible.
  • This commission is about creating new collaborations and concepts – applications must involve a collaborative partnership, therefore collaborators should not be from the same business / organisation / collective. The two collaborators must be working together for the first time.
  • Each collaborator must be based in Dundee, or within the Tay Cities region. This region covers Dundee City, Angus, Perth & Kinross and North Fife.

The commission will be awarded to a partnership who can demonstrate they have an early-stage experimental idea that has the potential to positively impact society – such as protecting and improving our environment, supporting equity and inclusion, improving health and wellbeing… The commissioned resource will be used to further scope out an early-stage digital or physical prototype.

TENDER OPEN: Literature House for Scotland

The Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust is calling for architects and designers to bring their expertise and creativity and enter a competitive Tender process to work with the Trust to create a Literature House for Scotland at John Knox House in Edinburgh.

The development at John Knox House would be part of a wider ambition to enhance the Literary Quarter around the Netherbow area of the Royal Mile and invest in and develop the Scottish Storytelling Centre.

Alison Bowden, Director of the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust, said:

“We’re excited and pleased to be entering this next stage in our long-term cultural development plan for John Knox House and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. We’re looking for a really excellent and inspiring design team to work with, and people who understand how special the location is and how important these buildings are to Edinburgh.

Once the team is appointed, our priority will be to complete some feasibility work so that in 2021 we will be able to present detailed ideas for the future of John Knox House and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. Working together with the Church of Scotland (who own both buildings), the City of Edinburgh Council, Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland, and the local community, our hope is that we will transform the way Scotland understands its literary story by reinvigorating this magnificent and historic building, and giving it new purpose as Scotland’s first Literature House.”

The Literature House will be the home of Edinburgh’s literary story. It will provide a year-round welcome with information, ideas and inspiration to help you connect with Edinburgh as a literary city, and Scotland as a literary nation. This is the place to discover Scotland’s literary heritage and contemporary creativity, and learn more about our incredible books, storytellers, and writers. The House will be a dynamic space where contemporary design and historic architecture meet to create an evolving, immersive reading experience, bringing alive great Scottish writing, past and present.

The Literature House development would also bring investment in the Scottish Storytelling Centre and widen the reach of an award-winning arts venue. The buildings are at the heart of the Literary Quarter, in the Netherbow area of the Royal Mile, a glorious honeycomb of buildings, closes, gardens and streets in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town.

Working with the local community, the ambition is to improve the environmental setting to create a haven where people can connect with Scottish books and literature in traffic-calmed areas that have seating for readers, new artworks, inscriptions and digital interfaces. It would provide a year-round information point for the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature, to encourage people to explore the literary city and literary Scotland more widely.

CENSUS OPEN: Dundee Design Census

In July 2019, we launched the first Dundee Design Census! This has helped us to better understand the landscape of Dundee’s design community.

We would encourage all Dundee based designers to complete this census if you haven’t already done so! It will take up to 20 minutes of your time to answer all of the questions. These will ask about the work that you do, the design field you are part of, the way you work and where you work.

Our census has been designed to share knowledge, spaces, tools and facilities. Your input will help us to reach as much of Dundee’s design community as possible as well as enabling us to send you tailored opportunities and events.

Any personal information you share (such as email addresses) will be kept private, but public information such as your name/business name, social media/website data, the work you do, may be shared.
