In partnership with greenspace scotland, we are looking for designers/creative practitioners with a background in co-creative, participatory practice to work with local groups and communities to co-design a Covid community memorial as part of the Remembering Together programme for Dundee.

Remembering Together will commission creative practitioners in all 32 local authority areas in Scotland to co-create with communities, exploring who, what and how we want to remember and honour all those affected by Covid. Offering a place to connect, to reflect and to create, Remembering Together is about creating together, being part of a process to commemorate those who have lost their lives and those who have experienced loss or change. This programme will also celebrate the ways in which Scottish communities have come together during the most difficult times.
Taking an inclusive, learning and sustainable approach, this programme is founded on the following 4 values: relevant, welcoming, aware, honest.
Remembering Together is being delivered by greenspace scotland at the request of Scottish Government.
The project will have 2 phases:
In phase 1, a designer/creative practitioner will be supported with a £15k commission to cover fees and associated costs to work with local communities in a co-designed approach. Together with local communities, the selected designer will explore and shape ideas for a creative output/memorial that reflects local people’s experiences of the pandemic.
Collaborations are welcome to apply for phase 1, but please note that for the fees and associated costs, a maximum £15k budget is available. If the applicant(s) are short-listed, they will be asked to break down these costs in a projected budget.
In phase 2, funding of circa £100k will be available in each local authority area to realise the project. This may include commemorative gardens, memorials, public or digital artworks, theatre or music performance events, or events in parks, greenspaces or other types of public space.
It will be the phase 1 designer(s)/creative practitioner(s) co-design with community groups and individuals that will inform the creative output to be developed during phase 2. It is expected that the phase 1 designer(s)/creative practitioner(s) will remain involved throughout phase 2, but it is possible that UNESCO City of Design Dundee together with greenspace scotland will call for new creative practitioners to support the development and delivery of the creative outputs determined by the phase 1 designer.
This call out is for phase 1 only. Following the submission of an expression of interest, the short-listed candidates will be invited to interview on Monday 11 April 2022 and asked to provide further details.
The phase 1 designer will be appointed in April and will have approximately 5 months to complete phase 1 depending on availability. Phase 2 will begin immediately after phase 1 and will have 9 months for completion.

We are seeking a designer(s) or creative practitioner(s) working in any creative medium with experience of working with diverse community groups. The selected designer(s)/creative practitioner(s) can be practicing across broad disciplines such as dance, theatre, craft, film, digital art, literature, music, and more.
The designer(s)/creative practitioner(s) must have experience of, or ability to demonstrate within their practice, using co-design as an approach to working collaboratively with diverse communities.
The process of this commission should give space to local individuals who have been impacted by the pandemic and encourage them to engage with the programme through a co-design led practice. These individuals will vary from having lost loved ones from Covid or from other illnesses during the pandemic, and those who have experienced change, loss and isolation in other ways. The process of this commission will also acknowledge the ways in which communities continue to support each other.
Through this co-designed approach, the lead designer(s)/creative practitioner(s) will use creative methods and tools to spark conversations and ideas with diverse communities to define what a ‘memorial’ means to them.
This engagement with community groups will take place with strong safeguarding, data protection policy and risk assessments in place. Both UNESCO City of Design Dundee and greenspace scotland recognise that practitioners working in socially engaged practices will need support to deliver the project. Wellbeing and delivery support will be provided in a number of ways.
What is expected of the selected designer(s)/creative practitioner(s):
- Develop and maintain a timeline and projected budget of Phase 1’s community engagement process.
- Manage the £15k budget expenditure with support from UNESCO City of Design Dundee who will order any materials required and manage invoices.
- Liaise with UNESCO City of Design Dundee throughout the process who can offer support with any barriers that may be faced.
- Identify communities or individuals living in Dundee who have been adversely impacted by Covid, to participate in Phase 1 of this project. Evidence should be provided as to why these communities have been identified.
- Establish sustainable relationships with key partners and participants.
- Devise and deliver a programme of engagement activities with these communities.
- Visit the community centres, libraries and care homes in the wards where these communities live, and seek external venues to deliver these engagement activities in, if applicable.
- Identify participants who would be interested in moving forwards with the project into phase 2, supporting sustainability and community dialogue.
- Generate and propose ideas for phase 2 in collaboration with participants.
- Participate in the project’s monitoring and evaluation process by gathering and collating written, photographic and/or film documentation of the process and engagement.
- Evaluate, reflect and provide feedback of the community engagement process in the final stages of phase 1.
Essential experience:
- Applicants must either be living, working or studying in Dundee City. Each local authority in Scotland will be releasing briefs for creative practitioners for both phases 1 and 2 of this programme.
- Applicants should be a member of the PVG scheme. Please note, the only exemption to a PVG membership would be if it was clearly outlined in the expression of interest if one or more of the applicants in a creative team would not be leading the community participation.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate experience of working in the community with a variety of groups.
- Experience and commitment to using co-design as an approach to collaborating with diverse communities.
- Demonstrate time management and organisational skills.
- Applicants should demonstrate the flexibility to adapt to the needs of participating communities. This may include evening or weekend work.
Desirable experience:
- Experience of managing overall project budget expenditure.
- Experience of working with and developing relationships with communities in Dundee.
- Degree or studying towards a degree in a creative subject, education, occupational therapy, community learning and development or similar.
£15,000 is available for the Phase 1 commission to cover fees, associated costs and irrecoverable VAT.
Designers/creative practitioners with access requirements will be supported to apply for Access to Work (AtW). If they do not qualify for this, they will be supported with up to £5,000 to address their access barriers and those of the phase 1 participating communities.
