Camillo Atlas: Appointed Maker for 2026 SAY Award Design Commission

This year’s Design Commission winner Camillo Atlas is calling for local donations of HDPE waste plastic, such as bottle tops and shampoo bottles, which they will recycle and utilise as materials in the creation of these awards.

Camillo is committed to sourcing, designing and manufacturing the awards all within a 2-mile radius of Caird Hall Dundee, where the awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 5 November 2026.

Camillo Atlas: Appointed Maker for 2026 SAY Award Design Commission

As part of the Scottish Album of the Award’s (SAY) host city partnership with Dundee, local maker, Camillo Atlas, has been selected to create the bespoke prizes for the bands and artists being recognised at the SAY Award Ceremony which takes place at Caird Hall on Thursday 5 November. Driven by a belief that design should create lasting value rather than contribute to waste, Camillo creates pieces that celebrate the stories and character of reused materials.

Every year, the SAY Award Design Commission appoints an artist, designer or maker to create unique prizes, responding to the theme of sustainable design & highlighting the enduring links between music and design in Scotland. Applicants are asked to demonstrate how they will place sustainability at the forefront of the design and manufacture process. Previous commissions have included jesmonite arches, sand-cast recycled glass sculptures, and low-carbon concrete and terrazzo totems.

This year, the commission received 14 expressions of interest from applicants living or working within a DD postcode. Makers were encouraged to take inspiration from the city of Dundee and the wider region. Camillo Atlas particularly impressed the commission panel with his commitment to sustainably-centred making, architectural inspirations, and investment in Dundee’s creative community. Camillo transforms discarded plastics and timber into furniture, interiors and one-off objects aiming to create meaningful pieces that celebrate people, place and craftsmanship whilst encouraging a more considered relationship with the objects we live with.

Driven by a belief that design should create lasting value rather than contribute to waste, Camillo creates pieces that celebrate the stories and character of reused materials. By collaborating with local coffee shops, restaurants and bars, Camillo collects his waste plastic from the local Dundee community, involving all of us in the process of making.

Camillo Atlas is a designer and maker based in Dundee whose work explores the creative potential of reclaimed materials through contemporary craft. Originally from Germany and a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, his practice combines traditional making techniques with a commitment to sustainability, transforming discarded plastics and timber into furniture, interiors and one-off objects.

Driven by a belief that design should create lasting value rather than contribute to waste, Camillo creates pieces that celebrate the stories and character of reused materials. Crowdfunder launched inviting the public to support Dundee’s Covid Community Memorial Garden.

On Monday 10th November 2025, UNESCO City of Design Dundee launched a Crowdfunder inviting the public to support the creation of Dundee’s Covid Community Memorial Garden. Contributions will go towards this free, permanent memorial garden and greenspace which will be situated next to Moncur Crescent Playpark, on Caird Avenue.

Dundee’s Covid Community Memorial Garden, due to be installed by Autumn 2026, will be a colourful labyrinth where people can come together to reflect and connect with others and nature.

The garden is the outcome of Dundee’s participation in a national project across 32 local authority areas in Scotland called Remembering Together. The project has encouraged communities to collectively commemorate loved ones who lost their lives, reflect on the difficult times, and remember their positive experiences. It has been a space to celebrate the ways communities were brought together during this time and heal as a nation.

The public are invited to donate to Dundee’s Memorial in commemoration of their loved ones or to memorialise their own experiences of the Covid pandemic. Donors can choose to select one of three tiered rewards or donate smaller amounts of money.

By donating £20, donors will receive a packet of wildflower seeds for planting in their own garden or community. By donating £50, donors will receive a packet of wildflower seeds and a Corten steel bird decoration to display in their own home or garden. Finally, by selecting the top tier of a £100 donation, these donors will receive both rewards and will be allocated a bird on the garden’s central artwork.

The garden’s central artwork will include a sculptural display of birds in flight mirroring the natural waves, curves and shapes in the planting. Birds often have connotations of the changing of seasons, freedom of movement and new beginnings, reminding us of our loved ones. They were selected as the artworks’ motifs by local communities in collaboration with designers, Old School Fabrications.

The memorial’s materials of Corten steel and timber, as well as perennial planting have been considered with longevity, low maintenance and sustainability in mind. The design has been well considered in regard to maintenance and designed to ensure that the space is safe and inviting to visit.

The Memorial design was developed from a series of conversations and workshops with local communities, delivered by design studio Around Zero. The workshops were held across Dundee and invited people to reflect on their Covid experiences and to define what a pandemic related memorial would look like for them. The final design created by design studio Old School Fabrications reflects the emotional twists and turns of Covid but also encourages people to take time out of their day to enjoy fresh air and connect with nature.

This fundraising effort offers a meaningful way for the public to get involved, helping to make the artwork even bigger and better, while also having the opportunity to take home a symbolic piece of the memorial.

“Those who generously donate £100 and above, will be allocated their own memorialised bird shape within the Garden’s central artwork, as well as receiving their own Corten steel bird ornament and a packet of wildflower seeds.”

“We’re really pleased with the Memorial’s location at Moncur Crescent, as it was important for our design to be located close to a playpark for children and young people, who were impacted by isolation during the Covid pandemic.”

“I lost my grandfather to Covid and never had the opportunity to say goodbye. The Memorial Garden will give me a place to sit and share my memories with others and allow our younger generation to have a fun place to find out how Covid affected our lives.”

Remembering Together

A project that collectively reflected, remembered, offered hope and healed communities across Scotland. Remembering Together offered a space for communities to come together and process what Covid meant, and continues to mean, for Scotland as a nation. This project commissioned artists in all 32 local authority areas in Scotland to co-create with local communities to find ways of honouring the people who were affected by Covid and the ways they want to remember them.

We are delighted to be working in partnership with Andie Sewing School on a tartan design competition for Tayside Mountain Rescue which launched on Monday 26^th May.

The design competition is available for young people aged 18 and under, and closes on Monday 28th July. A design pack, including a brief, inspiration and a tartan template is available to download here or can be picked up from Level 1, Central Library, The Wellgate.

Tayside Mountain Rescue is a team of dedicated volunteers who respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, rescuing members of the public in crisis.

They always look for innovative ways to engage with the public, encouraging others to safely visit the outdoors. They currently do this through the Hamish Hub. The idea to create a tartan for Hamish the Highland Coo was developed by Andie Sewing School student Zoe, aged 13:

“I’ve been going to sewing classes at Andie Sewing School for a few years now and I already knew about Hamish and his song. I thought, why can’t Hamish have his own tartan?

“I mentioned it to the volunteers I know at Tayside Mountain Rescue Team who thought it was a great idea. I’m looking forward to helping choose the winning tartan and then later making an outfit from it during my sewing classes at Andie Sewing School. I think other kids will really enjoy taking part over the summer holidays.”

“Tayside Mountain Rescue Team is always looking for ways to engage with the community and we already have our Hamish Hub which aims to encourage kids to visit the outdoors safely. The Tartan design project is another way to interact with kids in Tayside in a fun way to help show them the wonderful landscapes they have on their doorstep. The pictures in the design pack show the variety of landscapes within Tayside and the variety of colours both in nature and as part of our uniform. We hope the kids will be inspired from these pictures and use their imagination to create a beautiful Tartan. We are all volunteers and rely on public donations and we hope that Hamish’s Tartan will help us stay on the hills for many years to come.”

The winning design will be registered as an official tartan which will be used across Tayside Mountain Rescue merchandise and as outfits for Hamish.

Each finalist will receive a surprise from Hamish, and the winner will be invited to attend Tayside Mountain Rescue’s Volunteer Fun Day on Sunday 28^th September. Students of Andie Sewing School will have the opportunity to design a brand-new collection with the winning tartan design in the Autumn.

“We were thrilled to be asked to partner on this project to help celebrate the work of Tayside Mountain Rescue and their team of volunteers, through a developing their own tartan. Two of our designation’s key aims is to champion local design talent and to encourage public participation in design, which we are excited to deliver through this tartan competition with Andie Sewing School.

Andie Sewing School

Andie Sewing School is an award-winning children’s sewing school specialising in comprehensive sewing education for young people of all ages. With expert teachers and a fun, nurturing environment, they focus on bringing out the creativity, imagination and personality in every child who attends.

The Sewing School provides classes, workshops and holiday camps, as well as adult weekly classes and private hires for parties. In addition to sewing classes, they have a range of creative and cooking classes too. Andi Sewing School is based at Creative Studios on Staffa Place in Dundee.

Tayside Mountain Rescue

Tayside Mountain Rescue are made up of 50 volunteers who carry out emergency outdoor rescues from Montrose on the East Coast of Scotland to Blair Atholl and Loch Rannoch south of the Cairgorms, down to Kinross bordering Fife.

The Tayside Mountain Rescue team are on call to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, rescuing members of the public in crisis, from mountains to rivers in all weather conditions. Volunteers receive training to keep themselves and the public safe, but the team have a range of experience in mountaineering, map and compass skills, remote medical expertise, technical rigging, swiftwater rescue and search management. They have serving police officers, teachers, managers, engineers and outdoor professionals working with them alongside a number of search & rescue dog handlers.

2024 Festival to celebrate the city’s 10th anniversary of UNESCO City of Design designation working with local and international partners to present an ambitious and optimistic programme of design-centred exhibitions, events and projects
Festival to take place from 23 – 29 September 2024 in a dedicated space at the Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc which will be transformed into a national hub of design during a week of design-led exhibitions, events and experiences

A new evergreen brand identity for Dundee Design Festival has been created by Martin Baillie Studio. It has been designed to act as a blank canvas – allowing designers to produce a bespoke creative concept for the marketing of each iteration of the festival.
For the 2024 edition, a competition with the 2024 final year Graphic Design cohort at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design will see the winning students’ design writ large across the city and the Festival branding, staff uniforms and marketing materials

From the 23rd of September 2024, Dundee Design Festival will activate a former factory space with work by over 100 designers, exploring a multiplicity of contemporary design ideas and practice. As Scotland’s National Design Festival, the programme will further anchor Dundee’s identity as a city of design.

UNESCO City of Design Dundee are poised to celebrate their 10th year as the city’s design champions in an iconic venue that has rarely been accessible to the public. Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc will become Scotland’s biggest design event with a week-long celebration featuring an exciting line-up of design-led exhibitions, events and experiences.

Curated by Local Heroes founder Dr Stacey Hunter, the 5th Festival embraces Multiplicity as its theme. The programme will feature local, national and international elements showcasing the diversity of design, recognising the multiplicity of ways that designers and makers contribute to our world from design and craft to art and architecture.

Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc sits on the site of the former Michelin Tire factory. Powered by a mixture of sustainable and clean energy, the venue is the perfect festival partner with over 10,000 square metres of space that allows DDF to bring the work of over 100 designers together under one roof.

Ahead of a full programme launch in early 2024, Dundee Design Festival confirmed details of one of the many exhibitions taking place next year. Hyper-Local: Objects from the UNESCO Design Cities Network will be an international exhibition of design objects that embody specific qualities about the place that it comes from. The inspiring designs have been selected from the global network of UNESCO Cities Of Design. Participating cities include; Bilbao, Detroit and Nagoya. The exhibition will tell a city-specific story about design spanning materials and craftsmanship, industrial innovation, technology and culture.

Speaking ahead of the festival its Creative Director Dr Stacey Hunter said:

“Our UNESCO Design Cities exhibition will reveal a multiplicity of ways of thinking about design. Whether made by hand or rapidly-prototyped, the objects will offer audiences a unique snapshot of international design solutions and a hyper-local insight into a diversity of cultures. It’s our anniversary present to the city and I look forward to sharing this expanded understanding of design and its contribution to everyday life, society and culture with Festival audiences.”

About Dr Stacey Hunter

Stacey Hunter curates, writes and produces within a contemporary design context; her collaborative exhibitions and projects are known and appreciated for their unconventional approach and broad appeal. She is committed to the development of design culture in Scotland and enlivening design and craft discourses. Stacey founded Local Heroes to present the work of outstanding designers working in Scotland and collaborates with a diverse range of organisations from airports and cultural hubs to hotels, hospitals and design-led businesses.

Her PhD was awarded by The University of Edinburgh’s Architecture School in 2015. In 2017 V&A Dundee named her a Design Champion; in 2018 she won Creative Edinburgh’s Leadership Award and in 2019 she was selected by Cove Park; Arts Initiative Tokyo and Creative Residency Arita to visit Japan for two months as design curator in residence. Later that year she was a designer in residence at The Suttie Art Space in Aberdeen. During lockdown Hunter was a curator in virtual-residence at Edinburgh’s Design Informatics / Inspace Gallery. In 2021 she produced the critically acclaimed The Future of Home exhibition in Brompton Design District as part of London Design Festival. In 2022 Craft Scotland commissioned Hunter to produce ‘Sustaining Curatorial Careers’ a research report exploring the key role curators play in sustaining and innovating Scotland’s ecosystem for contemporary craft. #WhoIsTheDesigner campaign launches

The designers and architects behind much-loved public spaces in Dundee and Montréal are being showcased in a new international photography campaign which launches today (Wednesday 18 October).

Dundee’s photographs include The Leaf Room in Ninewells Community Garden by Jonathan Reeve at Voight Architects, Discovery Dome Gallery by Ged Young at AIM Design, and The Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve Education Pavilion by Kirsty Maguire Architects.

“Who is the designer – Who is the architect” seeks to emphasise the creative work of dedicated professionals and increase public awareness regarding the recognition of architects and designers. Organized by Kollectif, an architecture platform based in Montréal, this third edition will spotlight exceptional projects crafted by talented architects and designers from UNESCO Cities of Design, Montréal (Canada) and Dundee (United Kingdom).

This joint initiative between the two cities has emerged from a desire to highlight the importance of acknowledging architects and designers when presenting their projects in the media, and a commitment to collaborate and share best practices aimed at supporting the design culture in our cities.

With this international photo campaign, the featured cities wish to convey a clear message: behind each photographed project, regardless of its scale, stands a committed team of city representatives, engineers, contractors, and sub trades led by many talented designers and architects.

All photographs will be revealed through the official social media profiles of the City of Montréal’s Bureau du design, Design Dundee and Kollectif, with individual portraits, a brief overview of the concept and key contributors being posted every week.

Designers, architects, and the public can also actively participate in this campaign through the hashtags #WhoIsTheDesigner #WhoIsTheArchitect.

The buildings and urban spaces featured in Dundee’s campaign are:

Seabraes Viewpoint, by Callum McRobbie & Rachael Higgins, Landscape Designers at Dundee City Council.

In 2022, Dundee City Council embarked on a redevelopment project for this small but important public space, making use of reclaimed and sustainable materials and planting. The planting design commits to creating an unobstructed whole view which guides the visitor through the greenspace and makes the most of the stunning southern aspect.

Discovery Dome Gallery, by Ged Young, architect at AIM Design.

The Discovery Dome Gallery is an immersive visitor experience and a dramatic reworking of an underutilised space. In 2022, this reimagining of the entrance and reception area resulted in a bold design and detailing reflect the colours, ice flows and forms of the Antarctic.

V&A Dundee Community Garden, by Gary Kennedy architect at kennedytwaddle and Linsey McIntosh a designer and co-design specialist.

This innovative co-design project is a contemporary public space which has a positive impact on health and well-being of its design team and the people who use it today.  Informed by potting sheds, the garden has shelter, a sunken ‘hearth for people to gather, planters and collects rainwater to maximise sustainability.

The Leaf Room, by Jonathan Reeve architect at Voight Architects

Inspired by the natural form of a folded leaf, The Leaf Room is at the heart of Ninewells Community Garden. A beautifully and sensitively designed building, it provides a sheltered, accessible and communal space used by people of all ages and abilities in a wide range of garden activities.

The Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve Education Pavilion by Kirsty Maguire, architect at Kirsty Maguire Architects.

Commissioned by Nature Scot, the pavillion welcomes visitors to the reserve, showcasing information about the local wildlife and nature you can see there. At the end of its life, it is designed for deconstruction so to leave no trace on the environmentally important habitat and fragile landscape it occupies.

Scottish Dance Theatre Studio extension at Dundee Rep Theatre by Alice Turpie architect at Nicoll Russell Studios.

Home of Scottish Dance Theatre, this extension created a dance studio, changing rooms and support accommodation for Scotland’s flagship contemporary dance company. Respecting the original and distinctive geometric features of the existing building, the space is flooded with light from above by virtue of a skylight in the pyramidal roof.

New map launched that includes all 58 UK UNESCO sites for the first time

Visitors encouraged to discover new sites and destinations on their doorstep

Ignite your summer adventures and discover Dundee alongside 57 other unique UNESCO sites in the UK and crown dependencies thanks to a newly illustrated map, now available to download for free from the UK National Commission for UNESCO.

From expansive mountain ranges and stunning coastlines to vibrant cities and rural landscapes – the UK’s UNESCO sites are destinations of world-class natural and cultural heritage. For the first time a map, designed by the creative cartographer Tom Woolley, brings together all of the Biosphere Reserves, Creative Cities, Global Geoparks and World Heritage Sites across the British Isles that are waiting to be discovered.

Visitors to the sites are invited to immerse themselves in the spectacular vistas of the slate landscape of Northwest Wales or the Scottish Highlands. Dive into the literary heritage of Manchester or Edinburgh. Scale the mountains of the English Lake District or the peaks of Fforest Fawr. Uncover legends and folklore along the Giant’s Causeway or Stonehenge. Breathe in the sea air of Brighton and Lewes, North Devon or the English Riviera. Tackle the northernmost frontiers of the Roman empire by foot or by bike. Stroll around one of the great spa towns of Europe in Bath or a landed estate at Blenheim Palace. And dance the night away in an iconic concert hall in Belfast or at a festival under the stars at one of the world’s largest deep space observatories at Jodrell Bank.

The new map, released online this week, includes 29 World Heritage Sites, 13 Creative Cities, 9 Global Geoparks and 7 Biosphere Reserves that cover 13% of the UK’s landmass. Most of the sites are free to enter and conveniently accessible by public transport, offering the public new experiences to discover UNESCO sites in the UK and mark this summer with a visit to one of the world’s most special places.

Add Your Photos to Dundee’s Covid Memorial Project

Do you have a photo which represents your experience during the Covid pandemic? Can you describe the lockdown and the peak of the Covid pandemic in one picture?

Designers Ana & Vinishree are asking people across Dundee to share one picture that represents their experience during Covid. It could be an image that reminds you of something that happened or could be about the people, places or activities that were important during those times.

Photos that have already been shared include pictures of empty shelves, pets, making pasta, discovering new places, parks, and spending time with family. You can share whatever was important to you.

The photos will be used as part of the development of Dundee’s Covid Memorial and will help to get a collective understanding of what symbolises people’s experiences in Dundee during Covid.

For many people the lockdown experience and being away from friends and family have made them value their relationships; for others, the pandemic was a challenging time that led them to reconstruct their lives. Remembering Together programme for Dundee

We are excited to share that Design Studio Around Zero have been selected to lead phase 1 of the Remembering Together programme for Dundee!

Remembering Together is a national programme that brings together communities and creative practitioners in collective acts of reflection, remembrance, hope and healing.

Managed by greenspace scotland and supported with £4.2 million provided by the Scottish Government, memorial projects are being co-created in every local authority area of Scotland. Communities will work with creative practitioners to honour those that have lost their lives to Covid-19 and reflect on their own experiences.

We are delighted to be leading this programme on behalf of the city, with support from local partners including Dundee City Council, Faith in the Community, Funeral Link and Leisure and Culture Dundee.

As a result of the call for creative practitioners we issued in February 2022, design studio Around Zero have been appointed as the lead designers for phase 1 of this programme.

Around Zero are a social innovation and environment centred design studio building a positive future for the people and the planet. The team behind this initiative are driven by their passion making a difference through design, circular economy strategies and sustainable practices.

“The pandemic has impacted the people of Dundee beyond health and has stirred all aspects of individual lives, communities, and the built and natural environment.

“We will encourage participants to collectively reflect on these past two years through the co-design process. This is a creative way of echoing the lived experiences of the people of Dundee, their turmoil and resilience, and together build something that heals and revives their spirit.”

Our Desk Officer, Kirsten Wallace said:

“Together with greenspace scotland, we are delighted to appoint Around Zero to lead Phase 1 of the Remembering Together programme for Dundee.

“We hope that the individuals who take part in this programme will ultimately take pride in the memorial concept and legacy that they collectively co-design. We look forward to discovering what ideas the group will develop with designers, Ana and Vinishree of Around Zero.”

“It is fitting that communities will be integrally involved in this project of reflection on the pandemic.

Phase 1 of this programme is where memorial ideas and concepts will be developed with communities. This may include commemorative gardens, public or digital artworks, theatre or music performance events, or events in parks, greenspaces or other types of public space. These ideas will be realised in phase 2 of the programme, beginning later this year.

Scotland’s Covid Community Memorial was announced by the First Minster in March 2021, on the anniversary of Scotland’s first national lockdown. This was soon named Remembering Together: Co-creating Covid Community Memorials.
Remembering Together is being delivered by greenspace scotland and is supported with £4.2 million provided by the Scottish Government.
Remembering Together: Dundee is a working collaboration between UNESCO City of Design Dundee and greenspace scotland, supported by an advisory group of local partners and community organisations in Dundee. This advisory group is made up of: Dundee City Council, Faith in the Community, Funeral Link, greenspace scotland, UNESCO City of Design Dundee and V&A Dundee.
A National Advisory Group has been established to work with greenspace scotland in the delivery of Remembering Together which includes LGBT Health and Wellbeing, Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland, NHS Charities Together, Age Scotland, Diversity Scotland and more.
Remembering Together will be managed in two phases. Phase 1 is a five-month period of co-creation in each local authority area between communities and the artists/creative practitioners selected following responses to an advertised brief. In phase 2, for up to nine months, the co-created ideas in each area will be realised in whatever way communities feel is the most appropriate for them.
A learning plan has been developed to support creative practitioners in communities and to acknowledge that we are working in a diversifying Scotland and in a climate emergency. The pandemic is not over, we are living in times of change, and as such co-creating with care is a fundamental value supporting the programme.

Celebrating 75 years of UNESCO

We are joining the online global conversation during this year’s UNESCO General Conference by celebrating 75 years of UNESCO and the positive impact our designation has made to our city!

As the UK’s first and only UNESCO City of Design, we have taken time to reflect on how our place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network has impacted the lives of Dundee citizens, championed our Dundee based designers and celebrated our rich design heritage, with a look back at some of the projects that we have delivered over the past 7 years.

Our UNESCO City of Design designation is delivered through Dundee Partnership and hosted by V&A Dundee. Our city partners are Abertay University, Creative Dundee, Dundee City Council, Leisure & Culture Dundee, Northwood Charitable Trust, The University of Dundee and V&A Dundee. In 2014, Dundee became the UK’s first, and remains to be the only, UNESCO City of Design which has enabled us to learn from our global network of 246 creative cities, further champion our local designers and embed long lasting engagement with our communities.

Our designation has allowed us to deliver ambitious projects such as Dundee Design Festival which has just seen its 4th iteration spread across four physical locations and online. This major design festival has provided opportunities for Dundee based designers, engaged local communities and enhanced trade for local businesses, as well as inspiring partner design cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Since receiving our UNESCO membership, we have also delivered a number of projects with schools and youth groups across Dundee including Dundee Design Parade which almost 1000 young people have participated in so far. Each school class and youth group who have previously participated in Dundee Design Parade have gained new skills and learned about global cultures by selecting a UNESCO Creative City to represent and draw their inspiration from.

This showcase of culture and creativity has further celebrated our city’s place as a City of Design in the global UNESCO network and allowed each participating young person to feel they are a part of this.

More recently our UNESCO City of Design Dundee team have worked in partnership with Dundee City Council and Sustrans Scotland as part of their national Spaces for People project, funded by Scottish Government to implement the pedestrianisation of central Dundee street; Union Street and pocket parks on Eliza and Craigie Street in Dundee’s Stobswell neighbourhood. Both of these outcomes were driven by what local communities wanted to see in their area and were developed across a number of co-design workshops led by Service Design Academy and local designers.

The positive impact and success that the temporary interventions co-designed by Union Street business owners to assist with national COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 had on their businesses, has recently seen the street’s pedestrianisation become a permanent fixture.

Collaboration on a both a local and national scale is crucial to the success of the projects that we support and deliver. Through working together with our 12 fellow World Heritage Sites, Global Geoparks, Biospheres and Creative Cities here in Scotland, we are now thrilled to be a part of the world’s first UNESCO trail, steered and hosted by Visit Scotland.

Our Lead Officer, Annie Marrs, said:

“Here in Dundee, our UNESCO City of Design designation is a tool for connection; to connect with designers, build relationships with Dundee’s citizens and local, national and international networks. We are one of 246 UNESCO Creative Cities, one of 40 Cities of Design, and now, we are part of the world’s first UNESCO trail, right here in Scotland. Working with the various UNESCO designations across the country to create Scotland’s UNESCO Trail has strengthened our network and allowed us more insight and opportunity to share and learn from one another, reinforcing our national cultural offering. Our design designation places creativity and design at the heart of Dundee’s future, and we embrace the opportunity to be a part of this pioneering national initiative here in Scotland.”

This tool for connection has strengthened both our national and international relationships over the last 7 years, and by taking full advantage of our place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, we have been able to learn from and collaborate with a number of our sister cities.

An example of this has been our work with Montréal City of Design who developed the original CODE Souvenir concept, profiling the wealth of talent in their city, increasing sales and supporting the success of local designers. Inspired by this model, we launched the first volume of CODE Souvenir Dundee last year, which is a physical and digital catalogue of gift items designed and made by our local designers here in Dundee.

Aimed at corporate purchasers, retailers and the general public, CODE Souvenir Dundee is a place for tourists to find mementos of their visits, for local people to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones and for organisations to showcase local design talent.

Another example of our international collaborative way of working, was re-staging a communication tool designed by Agency of None as part of Dundee Design Festival 2019, at Detroit City of Design’s Include Conference in 2019. We were thrilled that both Lyall Bruce and Ryan McLeod of Agency of None were able to attend Detroit’s Include Conference to receive extremely positive feedback from fellow participants first-hand, who were encouraged to answer a series of questions using the bespoke design tools.

In 2019, we were also invited to Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week as their guest city of honour where we exhibited installations developed by Dundee creatives, Print Festival Scotland and Biome Collective. Through supporting these Dundee based designers in travelling to Bilbao to participate in their Design Week and learn from our sister city of design was not only a fantastic opportunity for them, but also highlighted the international recognition of the initiatives that we support and deliver here in Dundee, as Bilbao’s Guest City of Honour.

DUNDEE DESIGN FESTIVAL 2021 ANNOUNCEMENT

We are thrilled to share details of Dundee Design Festival 2021 including dates, locations and this year’s theme!

Produced by design studio Agency of None who have returned for another year following Dundee Design Festival 2019, the biennial Dundee Design Festival will be held from 23 September to 3 October 2021 at locations around the city and online.

The theme for Dundee Design Festival 2021 is Every Where Design, exploring how design is an essential but often invisible part of people’s lives. The festival will be centred around five ‘Design Houses’ which will each be created in collaboration with local communities and organisations to profile the value of design within our everyday lives.

The locations of the Design Houses are Hilltown Park situated in the neighbourhood of Hilltown to the north of the city-centre, a retail unit in the main shopping area of Stobswell, a former pump station in Finlathen Park, the waterfront plaza surrounding V&A Dundee, and a Digital Design House online for audiences anywhere in the world to experience.

Dundee Design Festival 2021 announced

The latest edition of the biennial Dundee Design Festival will be held this year from 23 September to 3 October at locations around the city and online.

The theme for Dundee Design Festival 2021 is Every Where Design, exploring how design is an essential but often invisible part of people’s lives. The festival, which is free to attend will be held at four sites around Dundee and will also have a virtual presence, for audiences anywhere in the world to take part.

The festival will be centred around five ‘Design Houses’ which will be created in collaboration with local communities and organisations to profile the value of design within our everyday lives.

The locations of the design houses are Hilltown Park situated in the neighbourhood of Hilltown to the north of the city-centre, a retail unit in the main shopping area of Stobswell, a former pump station in Finlathen Park, the waterfront plaza surrounding V&A Dundee, and a Digital Design House online.

UNESCO City of Design Dundee

Dundee was awarded UNESCO City of Design status in 2014 after meeting tough criteria set by the United Nations organisation. Dundee is the UK’s first, and only UNESCO City of Design.
