We launched Dundee’s first #WhoIsTheDesigner exhibition as part of Think Thursdays during Dundee Month of Design, with thanks to Dundee City Council.
#WhoIsTheDesigner is a campaign that started in Montreal, Canada, which is also a UNESCO City of Design. It started as a promotional tool for architectural projects as a focus to highlight the importance of naming architects and designers on social media and in press articles that highlight their work.
Quebec based architectural news organisation, Kollectif delivered the first campaign in 2021 calling on the hashtag #WhoIsTheArchitect or #WhoIsTheDesigner to be added to online articles.
They explained, “This simple gesture serves to reinforce a positive design culture and to encourage best practices in architecture,” write the organisers. “It’s also a mark of respect for the work of architects and designers, who have the same right to recognition as artists or photographers.”
This exhibition takes inspiration from that campaign and profiles designers in the field of architecture alongside graphic design, furniture, fashion, product, UX and jewellery.
Later in 2023, Dundee will participate in a global #WhoIsTheDesigner campaign alongside fellow UNESCO Cities of Design Montreal, Kaunas, Geelong, Saint-Etienne and Kortrijk.
