A talk by Matthew Jarron for RSA 200 hosted by the Abertay Historical Society

The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge is one of the most iconic pieces of public sculpture in Scotland, and a frequent stopping point for tourists travelling to the West Highlands. Yet its creator, Scott Sutherland, remains little known despite his considerable achievements as an artist and his arguably greater influence as a teacher. As Head of Sculpture at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee for 28 years, he had a lasting impact on the many notable sculptors who studied under him, several of whom have gone on to have international careers in public sculpture – including David Annand, Stan Bonnar, Alan Beattie Herriot, Doug Cocker and Frances Pelly.

This talk accompanies the exhibtion Dundee and the RSA in the Lamb Gallery, curated by the University of Dundee Museums as part of the Royal Scottish Academy’s 200th anniversary celebrations. It will take place in lecture theatre 5018 in the Matthew Building (level 5) at DJCAD. The easiest way to get there is to enter the building via the top entrance on Hawkhill Place – from there the lecture theatre is just to your left. If entering via the main front entrance on Perth Road, take the lift or stairs to level 5 then head to the far end of the main concourse.

Admission is free and refreshmenrts will be served from 6pm. Donations are requested from non-members.
