The Room

Explore a sensory exhibition co-designed by people with learning disabilities

This exhibition has been co-designed as part of the Delivering Change: Museum Transformers Programme.

Over the past 18 months, a group of local Dundonians with learning disabilities have worked together to create this unique, interactive, sensory room.

Filled with opportunities to play, create, explore and relax, the room invites visitors to engage with light, sound, texture and colour in their own way. From drawing and music-making to tactile experiences and quiet places to rest, the space celebrates creativity, choice and self-expression.

Hear from the group about how they would describe the exhibition:

“We designed a room to bring people in, get them to come in and see what they like. We designed the exhibit to let people know what we can do. People with learning disabilities, autism, and in wheelchairs can do a lot of things. In the room there is a tunnel, with torches and mirrors. There is also a wall you can draw on. Colour film is on the windows, so when it shines it will be nice. We have a comfortable bench too. We have a bit to play musical instruments and squishy cushions. There is a forest you can touch.

The room was made for play, sensory exploration, feeling, laughter, rest, friendship, mess, expression and choice. There is lots to explore, touch and sense in this room. It’s also a place to relax.”

This project has been co-designed by local Dundonian people with learning disabilities and designer Josafinni Porter Chambers. Supported by Museums Galleries Scotland’s Deslivering Change: Museum Transformers Programme and the William S. Phillips Fund.
