Dundee Design Festival 2021 is centred on taking design to new audiences, to help broaden the understanding of it and show its real potential. We believe design can create positive change in people’s lives now and in the future but only if we make it much more accessible and empower people through access to knowledge, skills and tools.
To help us achieve this, we are assembling a collaborative production team for the festival. This team will draw on their own skills, work together and collaborate with producers Agency of None to research, develop and produce many different forms of content that will create the foundation for this year’s festival. We are looking for people to join the team who:
- Can respond to a brief with interesting and creative ideas
- Can develop concepts independently before sharing them with the team
- Will actively contribute as part of the team but can work autonomously when needed
- Are experienced and comfortable working to tight deadlines
- Ideally, have an understanding of design locally, nationally and internationally
Roles
Below are the key roles we are looking to fill within the team for this year’s festival. We recognise that creative practitioners often develop their skills across multiple areas so we are looking to hear from specialists as well as those who have a multidisciplinary approach.
Research
We’re looking for someone who enjoys undertaking research on a wide variety of subjects. Although the core of the content being created will be design focused, the research will span across many areas. After discussions as a team, you will be expected to work independently to develop research on areas of interest.
- Identify areas of interest based upon team discussions
- Independently research across a wide range of topics
- Contact people of interest to fact check, gather information, conduct and document conversations
- Present findings to the team
- Contact third parties to investigate, negotiate and clear/ licence media
Writing
We’re looking for someone who has experience in writing engaging content for broad audiences. You should be able to work with research gathered by others, be willing to explore collaborative ideas generated by the team and be excited about sharing that with others through a written form.
- Create written content that appeals to a broad audience with an informal tone
- Be able to distil complex concepts into simple, accessible content
- Have experience in storytelling and developing content around a narrative
- Write engaging copy and content for both print and digital
Audio
We’re looking for someone who can record, edit and produce audio to a professional quality. You will be required to work as part of the team to help develop concepts and identify opportunities for the use of sound and recorded audio. You’ll also need to be comfortable recording audio in a variety of settings and situations as well as conducting interviews, whether this is face to face or remotely.
- Develop ideas for the creative use of audio
- Be comfortable recording audio in a variety of situations
- Have experience interviewing and recording participants
- Skills in the production of music and audio effects is desirable
Video
We’re looking for someone who can plan, shoot and edit video to a professional standard. As part of the team you’ll be expected to develop ideas and concepts for using video in new and interesting ways.
- Comfortable independently planning and shooting video
- Proficient in editing and post production
- Have experience in storytelling and constructing narratives within video
- Ability to negotiate access to locations
- Experience with face to face interviewing
Graphic/Digital Design (Paid Internships x 4)
As part of the festival we are committed to developing new and emerging talent. We are offering four paid internship positions to work alongside festival producers Agency of None and the content production team. Priority will be given to designers in education or at an early stage of their career.
- Proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and ideally InDesign
- Able to respond to a brief with creative ideas
- Ability to work autonomously when required
- Have basic animation skills
- Familiar with social media formats
Time/Pay
Each of the roles is based upon an initial 10 days of work to be completed across May, June and July. There is the potential that the hours may be extended as the project develops. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions this project will begin with remote working as a requirement but if/when restrictions allow then this is likely to change.
DDF is committed to fair pay for those working in creative sectors. As a publicly funded festival we adhere to Creative Scotland’s commitment to fair pay. Full roles will be paid at £302 per day and intern roles at £120 per day.
