#WhoIsTheDesigner campaign launches

The designers and architects behind much-loved public spaces in Dundee and Montréal are being showcased in a new international photography campaign which launches today (Wednesday 18 October).

Dundee’s photographs include The Leaf Room in Ninewells Community Garden by Jonathan Reeve at Voight Architects, Discovery Dome Gallery by Ged Young at AIM Design, and The Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve Education Pavilion by Kirsty Maguire Architects.

“Who is the designer – Who is the architect” seeks to emphasise the creative work of dedicated professionals and increase public awareness regarding the recognition of architects and designers. Organized by Kollectif, an architecture platform based in Montréal, this third edition will spotlight exceptional projects crafted by talented architects and designers from UNESCO Cities of Design, Montréal (Canada) and Dundee (United Kingdom).

This joint initiative between the two cities has emerged from a desire to highlight the importance of acknowledging architects and designers when presenting their projects in the media, and a commitment to collaborate and share best practices aimed at supporting the design culture in our cities.

With this international photo campaign, the featured cities wish to convey a clear message: behind each photographed project, regardless of its scale, stands a committed team of city representatives, engineers, contractors, and sub trades led by many talented designers and architects.

All photographs will be revealed through the official social media profiles of the City of Montréal’s Bureau du design, Design Dundee and Kollectif, with individual portraits, a brief overview of the concept and key contributors being posted every week.

Designers, architects, and the public can also actively participate in this campaign through the hashtags #WhoIsTheDesigner #WhoIsTheArchitect.

Follow the campaign from Wednesday 18 October in both Dundee and Montréal through the social media channels:

Councillor Lynne Short, Dundee City Council Spokesperson for Culture, History and Sport, said: “We are delighted that Dundee is partnering with the city of Montréal on this important initiative. The city of Dundee is incredibly proud of the architectural and urban design projects which surround us in our everyday lives. I am very supportive of this initiative to raise awareness of the people and teams behind these outstanding projects and committed to crediting the architects, designers, engineers and contractors who bring ideas to life.”

Annie Marrs, Lead Officer, UNESCO City of Design Dundee, said: “Collaborating and learning from fellow UNESCO Cities of Design around the world is what makes being a part of this network really special. Montréal’s project ‘Who is the designer – the architect’ caught my attention and I was pleased that Dundee has the opportunity to participate in the 2023 campaign. Through a series of stunning photos, this initiative introduces us to some of the designers who are helping to make Dundee a city of design.”

Luc Rabouin, Executive committee member responsible for commercial and economic development, knowledge, innovation and design, City of Montréal, said: “Montréal is proud to take part in this campaign alongside the City of Dundee, in the United Kingdom, to showcase the talent of local designers and architects worldwide. As a UNESCO City of Design, we recognise the importance of these creators for our territory, namely with regard to urban design and landscaping. They are the ambassadors for the future of our city.”

Éric Labelle, Director of the Economic Development Service, City of Montréal said: “I’m delighted with this Montréal edition of the ‘Who is the designer – Who is the architect’ campaign. It’s a promising initiative that is directly in line with the city’s commitment to developing and supporting creativity and design culture in Montréal. The design and architecture industry contributes directly to building our metropolis’s uniqueness, and therefore its attractiveness and competitiveness, while also contributing to individual and collective well-being.”

Martin Houle, Architect MRAIC, Director and Founder of Kollectif, said: “The enthusiasm generated by this campaign underlies a real challenge in recognizing the essential contribution of designers and architects in materializing various projects intended for all citizens. If artists and photographers, for example, are systematically credited for their work, we believe at Kollectif that it should be the same for our colleagues in the various design fields to raise awareness towards design culture here and abroad.”

The buildings and urban spaces featured in Dundee’s campaign are:

Seabraes Viewpoint, by Callum McRobbie & Rachael Higgins, Landscape Designers at Dundee City Council.

In 2022, Dundee City Council embarked on a redevelopment project for this small but important public space, making use of reclaimed and sustainable materials and planting. The planting design commits to creating an unobstructed whole view which guides the visitor through the greenspace and makes the most of the stunning southern aspect.

Discovery Dome Gallery, by Ged Young, architect at AIM Design.

The Discovery Dome Gallery is an immersive visitor experience and a dramatic reworking of an underutilised space. In 2022, this reimagining of the entrance and reception area resulted in a bold design and detailing reflect the colours, ice flows and forms of the Antarctic.

V&A Dundee Community Garden, by Gary Kennedy architect at kennedytwaddle and Linsey McIntosh a designer and co-design specialist.

This innovative co-design project is a contemporary public space which has a positive impact on health and well-being of its design team and the people who use it today.  Informed by potting sheds, the garden has shelter, a sunken ‘hearth for people to gather, planters and collects rainwater to maximise sustainability.

The Leaf Room, by Jonathan Reeve architect at Voight Architects

Inspired by the natural form of a folded leaf, The Leaf Room is at the heart of Ninewells Community Garden. A beautifully and sensitively designed building, it provides a sheltered, accessible and communal space used by people of all ages and abilities in a wide range of garden activities.

The Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve Education Pavilion by Kirsty Maguire, architect at Kirsty Maguire Architects.

Commissioned by Nature Scot, the pavillion welcomes visitors to the reserve, showcasing information about the local wildlife and nature you can see there. At the end of its life, it is designed for deconstruction so to leave no trace on the environmentally important habitat and fragile landscape it occupies.

Scottish Dance Theatre Studio extension at Dundee Rep Theatre by Alice Turpie architect at Nicoll Russell Studios.

Home of Scottish Dance Theatre, this extension created a dance studio, changing rooms and support accommodation for Scotland’s flagship contemporary dance company. Respecting the original and distinctive geometric features of the existing building, the space is flooded with light from above by virtue of a skylight in the pyramidal roof.

Stacey Hunter appointed as curator of Dundee Design Festival 2024

Stacey Hunter appointed as curator of Dundee Design Festival 2024

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Stacey Hunter as curator of the 2024 Dundee Design Festival. The appointment of design curator and Local Heroes founder, Dr Stacey Hunter points to a change of direction for the 2024 Dundee Design Festival which will celebrate the 10th anniversary of our UNESCO City of Design designation – the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design.

Since our designation in 2014, the UNESCO City of Design Dundee team has delivered four festivals which showcase the work of local and national designers; raising the profile of contemporary design in Scotland. The Festival harnesses the power of Dundee’s rich design heritage, a thriving contemporary design sector and a shared commitment within the city to utilise design as a transformative force. The 5th edition will take place in Autumn 2024 and is set to be the biggest and most ambitious festival to date, working with local and international partners to present a focused and meaningful programme of design-centred exhibitions, events and projects.

Design Curator Dr Stacey Hunter curates, writes and produces within a contemporary design context. Her collaborative exhibitions and projects are known and appreciated for their unconventional approach and broad appeal. As the founder of Local Heroes, her critically acclaimed exhibitions and projects have promoted Scottish design in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Tokyo, New York City and London. A V&A Dundee Design Champion, and recipient of the Creative Edinburgh Leadership Award, Stacey is committed to the development of design culture in Scotland and enlivening design and craft discourses.

Notable projects providing a platform for designers based in Scotland delivered by Dr Stacey Hunter include:

  • The Future of Home, an exhibition showroom at London Design Festival 2021 celebrated Scotland’s contemporary design scene
  • Still Lifes, a specially curated virtual exhibition for New York City Jewellery Week in partnership with The Scottish Goldsmiths Trust (2020) giving a glimpse of all that was new and fresh about contemporary jewellery from Scotland
  • Scottish Design at Edinburgh Airport, a major design exhibition at Edinburgh Airport created specially for Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016

She will join UNESCO City Of Design Dundee’s delivery team, led by Annie Marrs, Lead Officer of the city’s designation and recently appointed Deputy Coordinator of the Design Cities Network.

Annie Marrs, Lead Officer, UNESCO City of Design Dundee, said:

We are delighted to welcome Stacey into the role of curator for Dundee Design Festival and by her vision to elevate the festival’s profile on an international stage in our 10th anniversary year.

We believe that the role of Dundee Design Festival is to bring people together to explore design and stimulate conversations. It’s a place which sparks new ideas, discovers collaborations, creates positive change and profiles the work of designers in Dundee and beyond. Stacey is an excellent fit for our festival as she possesses the ability to work in a collaborative way with a wide variety of design disciplines complementing Dundee’s diverse research and practice-led design community.

Our team have been impressed by Stacey’s commitment to the development of design culture in Scotland and her role in enlivening design discourses. Her democratic approach to communicating about design and her work to-date offer audiences a snapshot of Scotland’s contemporary design landscape. We can’t wait to work with Stacey to create a festival which invites visitors to explore the potential of design to connect, to inspire and to transform the ways in which we live.

Newly appointed curator Dr Stacey Hunter said:

“I’m excited to be returning to Dundee in this role during such a special edition of the Dundee Design Festival. Since the city achieved the designation of UNESCO City of Design, it has undertaken highly innovative design projects and interventions. This is an opportunity to demonstrate what a Design City looks like and to programme an international celebration of Scotland’s design talent. Dundee Design Festival 2024 will anchor the city’s role as a national hub for design and be a meeting point and a homecoming for designers locally and internationally.”

“Cross-cultural exchange is at the heart of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The values that the network and the design community have in common is an eagerness to share ideas and an enthusiasm for making positive changes using newly-formed and historic ideas and approaches. My relationship with Dundee began with my undergraduate degree at DJCAD; my training as a designer here directly set me on a path to become a design curator. Since then I have developed projects and participated in design events here in Dundee and internationally. The city is both collaborative and generous – a powerful combination and a thrilling proposition for me to work within.”

We look forward to working with Stacey and for Dundee Design Festival 2024!

About Remembering Together

This activity is part of Remembering Together, a national project led by Greenspace Scotland where community memorials will be co-created across Scotland to honour the people we have lost, mark what has changed in our lives and preserve the best of what we have learned together during the Covid pandemic.

The impact of Covid 19 on our lives has been significant. For many people the lockdown experience and being away from friends and family have made them value their relationships; for others, the pandemic was a challenging time that led them to reconstruct their lives. Since then, we have changed, and we have learned. We would like to know your Covid story to help build a collective, inclusive memorial for Dundee.

Our Desk Officer, Kirsten Wallace said:

“Together with greenspace scotland, we are delighted to appoint Around Zero to lead Phase 1 of the Remembering Together programme for Dundee.

“We hope that the individuals who take part in this programme will ultimately take pride in the memorial concept and legacy that they collectively co-design. We look forward to discovering what ideas the group will develop with designers, Ana and Vinishree of Around Zero.”

Dundee City Council leader, John Alexander, said:

“It is fitting that communities will be integrally involved in this project of reflection on the pandemic.

“The council and its partners are working hard to help the city and its people recover from the challenges of Covid and move on to a better future for everyone.

Notes for editors:

  • Scotland’s Covid Community Memorial was announced by the First Minster in March 2021, on the anniversary of Scotland’s first national lockdown. This was soon named Remembering Together: Co-creating Covid Community Memorials.
  • Remembering Together is being delivered by greenspace scotland and is supported with £4.2 million provided by the Scottish Government.
  • Remembering Together: Dundee is a working collaboration between UNESCO City of Design Dundee and greenspace scotland, supported by an advisory group of local partners and community organisations in Dundee. This advisory group is made up of: Dundee City Council, Faith in the Community, Funeral Link, greenspace scotland, UNESCO City of Design Dundee and V&A Dundee.
  • A National Advisory Group has been established to work with greenspace scotland in the delivery of Remembering Together which includes LGBT Health and Wellbeing, Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland, NHS Charities Together, Age Scotland, Diversity Scotland and more.
  • Remembering Together will be managed in two phases. Phase 1 is a five-month period of co-creation in each local authority area between communities and the artists/creative practitioners selected following responses to an advertised brief. In phase 2, for up to nine months, the co-created ideas in each area will be realised in whatever way communities feel is the most appropriate for them.
  • A learning plan has been developed to support creative practitioners in communities and to acknowledge that we are working in a diversifying Scotland and in a climate emergency. The pandemic is not over, we are living in times of change, and as such co-creating with care is a fundamental value supporting the programme.

Celebrating 75 years of UNESCO
UNESCO Cities of Design Subnetwork 2018, photography by Alan Richardson.

In 2014, Dundee became the UK’s first, and remains to be the only, UNESCO City of Design which has enabled us to learn from our global network of 246 creative cities, further champion our local designers and embed long lasting engagement with our communities.

Our designation has allowed us to deliver ambitious projects such as Dundee Design Festival which has just seen its 4th iteration spread across four physical locations and online. This major design festival has provided opportunities for Dundee based designers, engaged local communities and enhanced trade for local businesses, as well as inspiring partner design cities in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Since receiving our UNESCO membership, we have also delivered a number of projects with schools and youth groups across Dundee including Dundee Design Parade which almost 1000 young people have participated in so far. Each school class and youth group who have previously participated in Dundee Design Parade have gained new skills and learned about global cultures by selecting a UNESCO Creative City to represent and draw their inspiration from.

This showcase of culture and creativity has further celebrated our city’s place as a City of Design in the global UNESCO network and allowed each participating young person to feel they are a part of this.

“Being involved in Dundee Design Parade has been a great way for young people to be as creative as they can, meet new friends which has been one of the best things to come out of this experience, work together to make such a brilliant design and show off what they have created on the day of the Parade.”

More recently our UNESCO City of Design Dundee team have worked in partnership with Dundee City Council and Sustrans Scotland as part of their national Spaces for People project, funded by Scottish Government to implement the pedestrianisation of central Dundee street; Union Street and pocket parks on Eliza and Craigie Street in Dundee’s Stobswell neighbourhood. Both of these outcomes were driven by what local communities wanted to see in their area and were developed across a number of co-design workshops led by Service Design Academy and local designers.

The positive impact and success that the temporary interventions co-designed by Union Street business owners to assist with national COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 had on their businesses, has recently seen the street’s pedestrianisation become a permanent fixture.

Collaboration on a both a local and national scale is crucial to the success of the projects that we support and deliver. Through working together with our 12 fellow World Heritage Sites, Global Geoparks, Biospheres and Creative Cities here in Scotland, we are now thrilled to be a part of the world’s first UNESCO trail, steered and hosted by Visit Scotland.

Our Lead Officer, Annie Marrs, said:

“Here in Dundee, our UNESCO City of Design designation is a tool for connection; to connect with designers, build relationships with Dundee’s citizens and local, national and international networks. We are one of 246 UNESCO Creative Cities, one of 40 Cities of Design, and now, we are part of the world’s first UNESCO trail, right here in Scotland. Working with the various UNESCO designations across the country to create Scotland’s UNESCO Trail has strengthened our network and allowed us more insight and opportunity to share and learn from one another, reinforcing our national cultural offering. Our design designation places creativity and design at the heart of Dundee’s future, and we embrace the opportunity to be a part of this pioneering national initiative here in Scotland.”

This tool for connection has strengthened both our national and international relationships over the last 7 years, and by taking full advantage of our place in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, we have been able to learn from and collaborate with a number of our sister cities.

An example of this has been our work with Montréal City of Design who developed the original CODE Souvenir concept, profiling the wealth of talent in their city, increasing sales and supporting the success of local designers. Inspired by this model, we launched the first volume of CODE Souvenir Dundee last year, which is a physical and digital catalogue of gift items designed and made by our local designers here in Dundee.

Aimed at corporate purchasers, retailers and the general public, CODE Souvenir Dundee is a place for tourists to find mementos of their visits, for local people to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones and for organisations to showcase local design talent.

Another example of our international collaborative way of working, was re-staging a communication tool designed by Agency of None as part of Dundee Design Festival 2019, at Detroit City of Design’s Include Conference in 2019. We were thrilled that both Lyall Bruce and Ryan McLeod of Agency of None were able to attend Detroit’s Include Conference to receive extremely positive feedback from fellow participants first-hand, who were encouraged to answer a series of questions using the bespoke design tools.

In 2019, we were also invited to Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week as their guest city of honour where we exhibited installations developed by Dundee creatives, Print Festival Scotland and Biome Collective. Through supporting these Dundee based designers in travelling to Bilbao to participate in their Design Week and learn from our sister city of design was not only a fantastic opportunity for them, but also highlighted the international recognition of the initiatives that we support and deliver here in Dundee, as Bilbao’s Guest City of Honour.

“One of the benefits of being part of this network is the opportunity to learn from each other. We have always taken inspiration from the visionary cultural regeneration of Bilbao. For Dundee to be invited as their 2019 guest city of honour has been really thrilling and I am delighted that Dundee designers have been able to participate.”

Councillor John Alexander, Leader of Dundee City Council, Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week 2019.

We are extremely thankful for the opportunities that have arisen since becoming a UNESCO Creative City in 2014 and the impact that these have had to the lives of Dundee citizens. We look forward to continuing to work together with our UNESCO Network to create and inspire for many years to come!

DUNDEE DESIGN FESTIVAL 2021 ANNOUNCEMENT

We are thrilled to share details of Dundee Design Festival 2021 including dates, locations and this year’s theme!

Produced by design studio Agency of None who have returned for another year following Dundee Design Festival 2019, the biennial Dundee Design Festival will be held from 23 September to 3 October 2021 at locations around the city and online.

The theme for Dundee Design Festival 2021 is Every Where Design, exploring how design is an essential but often invisible part of people’s lives. The festival will be centred around five ‘Design Houses’ which will each be created in collaboration with local communities and organisations to profile the value of design within our everyday lives.

The locations of the Design Houses are Hilltown Park situated in the neighbourhood of Hilltown to the north of the city-centre, a retail unit in the main shopping area of Stobswell, a former pump station in Finlathen Park, the waterfront plaza surrounding V&A Dundee, and a Digital Design House online for audiences anywhere in the world to experience.

Keep up to date with Dundee Design Festival here

Ryan McLeod and Lyall Bruce of Agency of None, said: “This year’s festival will celebrate Every Where Design, exploring the hidden and unusual design that exists all around us.  We are continuing to develop our vision of a design festival as a series of playful experiments that opens up design to new audiences by encouraging people to participate in lots of hands-on design activities.

“Through DDF21 we are aiming to help develop a healthier approach to design, one that broadens its understanding, breaks down barriers to entry and shows how it can be used to transform our communities and urban environments.”

Annie Marrs, Lead Officer, UNESCO City of Design Dundee, said: “From the outset, we’ve always tried to ensure that Dundee Design Festival reflects the world we are living in, with content showing the ways in which design can impact on our day to day lives.

“From the vast industrial space of West Ward Works in 2017 to the underused retail units of the Keiller Centre in 2019, our choice of venue has been really important to highlight the local relevance of the festival and 2021 is another step on that journey. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought into sharp focus the importance of our local areas, local services and communities. It wouldn’t make sense to hold DDF21 anywhere but within our neighbourhoods.”

UNESCO City of Design Dundee joins V&A Dundee

The team responsible for the UK’s first and only UNESCO City of Design will be hosted at V&A Dundee from today (1 June) in a new partnership.

Dundee’s UNESCO City of Design designation will now be hosted within Scotland’s design museum further supporting the city’s aim to position and champion design as a catalyst for community, physical and economic transformation. The partnership will bring ambition and resources together to further develop Dundee’s design leadership and capacity in the city, across Scotland and internationally.

UNESCO City of Design Dundee and V&A Dundee will collaborate on a range of projects and partnerships in Dundee, working with and learning from communities. The partnership will seek to develop ways to support the city’s designers and Scotland’s design sector while championing design from Scotland internationally. The variety of projects that this collaboration will support includes the biannual Dundee Design Festival.

This year’s Dundee Design Festival will take place in late September. Dundee-based design studio Agency of None will produce the festival which this year is located in venues across the city. These ‘design houses’ will be created in collaboration with local communities and organisations including V&A Dundee and will profile the value of design to our everyday lives.

Since the city became a UNESCO City of Design in December 2014 the delivery team have been hosted by Leisure and Culture Dundee. They have successfully delivered a variety of projects including three editions of the Dundee Design Festival; showcased Dundee designers internationally in exhibitions, conferences and festivals; co-designed the pedestrianisation of Union Street in response to the COVID pandemic with local businesses; launched CODE souvenir Dundee, a catalogue of locally designed gift items; and staged the Dundee Design Parade with hundreds of local young people celebrating Dundee’s place in the global network of UNESCO Creative Cities.

This announcement follows news that V&A Dundee will develop into Scotland’s centre for design over the next three years, which will include new partnerships that position design as one of Scotland’s greatest resources, connects communities, and empowers people.

Leonie Bell, Director of V&A Dundee, said: “Dundee is a design city, full of ideas, imagination and innovation, with many globally significant design achievements. Its south-facing riverside location with its creative and cultural spaces and communities, two leading universities and college make Dundee a wonderful place to live and work.

“Design enriches all our lives, it is about harnessing ambition and creativity to imagine and to create positive change, and this is so important as we begin our recovery from the pandemic and ask ourselves what kind of future we want.

“We are delighted to welcome, on behalf of the partners, the UNESCO City of Design Dundee team to V&A Dundee and look forward developing our ambitions, for design, for Dundee and for Scotland together.”

Annie Marrs, Lead Officer of UNESCO City of Design Dundee, said: “This new partnership cements Dundee’s commitment to design, and to using design as a tool to create change in our city. The programmes we run celebrate and demonstrate the impact of design, embrace co-design, promote talent, engage designers in decision-making and collaborate with other UNESCO Cities of Design.

“Over the last six years, the support of Leisure & Culture Dundee has enabled thousands of people to engage with design and experience design here in Dundee, as well as profile Dundee’s design talent on an international stage. They have encouraged, nurtured and supported the team and designation to flourish.

“We are excited to embark on this next stage of Dundee’s journey as a UNESCO City of Design, and to continue to uphold the values of UNESCO.”

Sinclair Aitken, Chair Leisure & Culture Dundee, said: “We are very proud to have been part of a team that secured for Dundee the UNESCO City of Design designation, and to have hosted to date the group of talented individuals responsible for the project.

“They have consistently delivered tangible benefits to the city and in passing the baton on to V&A Dundee trust and expect the successes of the past few years to continue. We are confident the new partnership will lead to greater opportunities and further developments.”

John Alexander, Dundee City Council leader, said: “UNESCO status has put Dundee on the international design map while also raising the local profile of the innovative work of our design community and the positive contribution it is making to our communities.

“This new partnership will build on our amazing achievements of the last few years and use design skills to assist in recovery as the city and Scotland moves forward from the public health emergency.”

Karen Merkel, UK National Commission for UNESCO, Non-Executive Director for Communication & Information, said: “The UK National Commission for UNESCO congratulates UNESCO City of Design Dundee on forging this unique new venture with the world-renowned V&A Dundee.

“The city of Dundee’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Design brings with it the global recognition of the city’s rich heritage in design for over 100 years and it now has working relationships with the worldwide network of 40 UNESCO Creative Cities of Design.

“The combined global reach of the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design network and V&A Dundee means that together they can attract and engage an even wider public directly in the whole field of design and give support to active participation in the creative industries.

“The worldwide recognition of UNESCO and the presence of V&A Dundee combined will draw significant attention to the city of Dundee and add lasting value to the cultural life of the city as well as further engaging visitors and cementing Dundee’s place as a leading player in design across the UK and beyond.”
