Dundee Design Festival is back and we are looking for volunteers to help out and get involved!
Returning from 23 September to 3 October 2021, Dundee Design Festival will be held at multiple locations across Dundee and online.
Produced by Agency of None, the theme for Dundee Design Festival 2021 is Every Where Design, exploring how design is an essential but often invisible part of people’s lives.
The festival will be centred around five ‘Design Houses’ which will include one Digital Design House online and four physical venues – that’s where you come in!
We are looking for volunteers who would like to work alongside the core festival team at any of the festival’s four physical design houses around the city.
These will be located at Hilltown Park situated in the neighbourhood of Hilltown to the north of the city-centre, a retail unit in the main shopping area of Stobswell, a former pump station in Finlathen Park and the waterfront plaza surrounding V&A Dundee. Each of these design houses will feature hands-on design activities for the public to get involved in.

As a volunteer, your role will be to assist with Front of House duties such as:
- Talking to the public and demonstrating how each interactive element works
- Promoting all Dundee Design Festival activity
- Directing visitors how to get to each design house
- Helping with queuing systems
- Counting the number of visitors we have each day
- Cleaning, setting up and tidying away equipment
There will be a combination of indoor and outdoor working with some of the design houses being all outdoors. We will work as best we can to accommodate your preferences of location. We have created a google form to gather a bit about you, your availability and which location(s) would suit you to volunteer at.
We will provide you with everything you need to know and you do not have to have a background in design to get involved! A passion for our city, a keen interest in cultural activity and a friendly first impression for visitors is what we would like to see.
We are committed to ensuring that our volunteers have the best experience at Dundee Design Festival and we are delighted to welcome back volunteers year after year. We are proud to hear of the stories from some of our previous volunteers including going on to develop their own business, secure freelance contracts, design internships and full time job roles.
As a Dundee Design Festival volunteer, you can expect:
- Free day ticket bus passes to and from the Design Houses
- Full Dundee Design Festival uniform and face coverings
- All activities to comply with current COVID-19 guidelines
- The Dundee Design Festival team to provide you with a reference for future roles and opportunities
- To learn skills from a multi-disciplinary team of designers and creatives which may help towards future opportunities
You can expect to hear from us before the end of August with an offer of volunteer shifts for you to consider around your availability. Volunteers are recruited in line with Leisure and Culture Dundee’s volunteer policy.
